Chrystal Smith, Suzanne Schulz and Tanis Tetreau scored and Erica Voogd posted the shutout in Monday’s 3-0 playoff win over the Airdrie United Aztecs to finish 2-1 at the Calgary tournament.
It’s also the first provincial medal in the Cow Town for the Mavericks after fourth-place results in 2013 and 2015.
The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League team was also awarded silver last year and gold in 2014 in Tier III and Tier IV bronze in 2012 at provincials in Edmonton.
Smith opened the scoring in the first half as she outpaced a defender and pushed the ball into the corner past the goalkeeper.

The turning point against Airdrie was a great save by Voogd on a corner kick early in the second half and the Mavericks absorbing some push back. As the ball was curving into the net, Voogd jumped up and one-handed it off the goal line. After the play, Schulz deposited a bouncing ball over the goalkeeper for the second goal.
The Mavericks kicked off provincials with Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Bandidas FC, the No. 1 Calgary team in the draw, and rebounded Sunday to defeat Rio Terrance FC 3-1.
Schulz and Natalie Miller netted goals against the Bandidas after falling behind early to the eventual gold medallists.
Miller also tallied twice and Smith scored against Rio Terrance, 14-0 in division 3B in the Edmonton District Soccer Association. Smith knotted the count at one before halftime with a great effort to outrun an opponent and tip the ball past the goalkeeper.
Miller, team’s leading goal scorer in SAWSL with nine, potted a pair after halftime.
The Mavericks, Bandidas and Rio Terrance finished 1-1 in pool play with a goal difference of zero. Each team beat each other, so on goals for, the Mavericks and Bandidas had five each and Rio Terrance had four. A shootout determined who would play for gold and bronze and the Mavericks lost out to the Bandidas.
In league play the Mavericks are 12-0 – 48 GF/5 GA in seven matches in the single division and 20 GF/0 GA in five matches in division one – after last year’s 17-1 showing in league and provincials as the winners of three consecutive division one playoff cups and four in five years.
The division one and two semifinals kick-off Sunday at Forest Park field.
Brezovski sisters
Podium results were achieved by the Brezovski sisters at the Alberta bantam and novice golf championships last month at The Bridges of Claresholm.
Representing the Sturgeon Valley Golf & County Club, Belle finished first in the U13 novice division and Brooke placed third in the U15 bantam division.
The novice tournament was a two-day 36-hole competition using the Stableford point system and Belle carded a 72 (36-36) for her second U13 championship in two years.
Brio Hempstead of the Banff Springs Golf Course was the runner-up at 60 (30-30).
Brooke shot a two-day total of 161 (83-78) to finish nine strokes behind the winner, Kaitlyn Wingnean (76-76) of the Derrick Golf & Winter Club, and seven back of Tillie Claggett (75-79) of the Glencoe Golf & Country Club.
SAMSL Rangers
The Forest Park Rangers failed to find the back of the net at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier III championship.
The top team in the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League was outscored 14-0 in three losses last weekend in Calgary.
The results were 3-0 to the Gladiators on Saturday and 8-0 to Evolution FC and 3-0 to Calgary Celtic FC on Sunday.
The Gladiators are 11-2-1 in division 3B in the Edmonton District Soccer Association, Evolution FC is a Calgary team and provincial silver medallist, and Celtic was the bronze medallist.
The Rangers are 14-2-1 (68 GF/21 GA) in the regular season and playoff round robin and Sunday’s semifinal against the DV Youngmen (7-8-2) will determine if last year’s SAMSL finalists will play the Impact Alumni (12-3-2) or Chester City (8-9) in the two-game aggregate for the playoff cup or third place trophy on Sept. 12 at Salisbury field and Sept. 17 at Larry Olexiuk Field.
