The defending Esso Cup midget AAA national champions are competing at the AFHL provincials this weekend in Red Deer and the winner advances to the best-of-three Pacific Regional playoff, April 6 to 8 in British Columbia, for a berth at the 10th annual Esso Cup, April 21 to 29 at Bridgewater, N.S.

Intermediate: 1 Lirette, 2 Smith, 3 Algot, 4 Morlock (Justin), 5 McCabe, 6 Stewart, 7 Wipf, 8 Wong, 9 Ingram, 10 Werner, 11 Nowell, 12 Fadden.

Recreation: 1 Allen, 2 Sawiak, 3 Iskiw, 4 LeBlanc, 5 Van Amsterdam, 6 Morlock (Jaden), 7 T. Algot, 8 Wright, 9 Clay, 10 Brand, 11 Datema, 12 Bakos.

U18 female competitive: 1 Team Mesloe – Norway, 2 Johnson, 3 Vincent, 4 Berg, 5 Phillips, 6 Wytrychowski.

U18 male competitive: 1 Oake, 2 Kobylnyk, 3 Team Kohn – Sweden, 4 Libbus, 5 Stewart, 6 Young.

U21 female competitive: 1 Hagglund, 2 Lepine, 3 L. Marks, 4 A. Marks, 5 Boorse.

U21 male competitive: 1 Jacques, 2 Parent, 3 Adams, 4 Scharff, 5 Taylor.

Sunday’s finals in St. Albert will include the top U21 men’s and women’s teams facing off in the Battle of the Sexes championship.

Provincial hockey

The Hockey Alberta championships for the midget 15 Flyers, midget AAA female Ron Hodgson Slash and bantam elite female Raiders wrap up this weekend.

The Flyers (29-6-6) are competing in the six-team Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League tournament in Lethbridge and last year finished third at provincials.

The Slash (23-8-1) are among four teams in Red Deer and the Alberta Female Hockey League tournament winner advances to the best-of-three Pacific Regional playoff, April 6 to 8 in British Columbia, for a spot at the 10th annual Esso Cup, April 21 to 29 in Bridgewater, N.S. The Slash are the defending national champions.

The Raiders (19-7-2) are playing at the six-team AFHL provincials in Grande Prairie.

Impact tryouts                                                                                            

The St. Albert Impact men’s and women’s tryouts for the Edmonton District Soccer Association season kick off this weekend.

Today’s session for the premier women is 4 to 6 p.m. at Foote Field and Sunday's division two men’s scrimmage starts at 10:30 a.m. at Victoria Soccer Club.

Upcoming tryout dates for the women are April 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. and April 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for premier and division one at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The division two men also gather April 8 at 12 noon at Larry Olexiuk Field.
