Baseball weekend

The Larry Rindero Memorial Tournament starts 6:30 p.m. Friday at Legion Memorial Park and Meadows Diamonds in Morinville.

The AA level tournament features 32 teams in midget, bantam, peewee and mosquito and the St. Albert Minor Baseball Association is represented by seven teams.

The Baseball Alberta Girls are also competing in the bantam and peewee divisions.

Monday’s finals are 3 p.m. for midget, 3:30 p.m. for mosquito and 4:15p.m. for bantam and peewee at the Legion diamonds

Visit www.stalbertbaseball.com for the tournament schedules and results.

Last year SAMBA renamed the annual Early Bird tournament during the May long weekend in honour of Rindero for his contributions as coach, volunteer and passion for the game.

The format was also switched to an AA tournament.

Two years ago, the Early Bird was cancelled before the first pitch was thrown because of wet weather.

Norwest game

The St. Albert Red Cardinals host the Sherwood Park Athletics tonight in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League.

First pitch is 6:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The Cardinals are 5-0 in league play and 9-3 overall after last weekend’s tournament in Okotoks.

The 4-3 loss to U18 Dawgs Red was followed by victories of 6-4 against the Fort McMurray Oil Giants, the host team for the U18 Baseball Canada nationals in August, 10-1 against the North Delta Blue Jays and 12-2 against the U16 Foothills Dawgs.

In the semifinals, the Cardinals lost 9-1 to U18 Dawgs Black, who beat U18 Dawgs Red in the final.

High school rugby

The Bellerose Bulldogs and Sturgeon Spirits buckle down in Thursday’s metro Edmonton division one women’s rugby match.

Kickoff is 4:45 p.m. at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

Bellerose is 4-0 (199 PF/17 PA) after knocking off the Bev Facey Falcons (3-2, 238 PF/71 PA), winners of six consecutive division one banners, 15-10 last week and Sturgeon is 2-1 (112 PF/91 PA) after going undefeated as the 2017 division two champion.

Last year at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association provincials, Sturgeon was the Tier 2 bronze medallist and in Tier 1 Facey was the silver medallist and Bellerose won the consolation final.

The seven-team league fixtures wrap up next week and the division one semifinals are May 28.
