Road Race good to go, Spring Flip meet and Esso Cup

Road race

The Landrex St. Albert Road Race is good to go Sunday with more than 250 projected runners pounding the pavement.

Race times are 9 a.m. for the 33rd annual 10-miler, 9:05 a.m. for the fourth annual 10-kilometre race, 9:10 a.m. for the fourth annual five km and 11 a.m. for the second annual one-km fun run for kids.

The start/finish line is positioned in front of the St. Albert Curling Club on Sir Winston Churchill Avenue.

Prior to Friday’s online registration deadline, 105 runners were confirmed for the 10-miler.

Last year’s winter weather on race day didn’t stop 284 finishers, including 105 in the 10-miler.

Proceeds from the road race, presented by Active Physio Works, support You Can Ride 2, a free program that teaches youths with cognitive disabilities how to ride a two-wheel bicycle.

Esso Cup

The 10th annual Esso Cup starts Sunday for the St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash in Bridgewater, N.S.

The six-team tournament opener for the defending midget AAA female national champions is against Pionnieres de Lanaudiere (Quebec).

The Slash, representing the Pacific Region, also plays Monday against the host Metro Boston Pizza of Bedford, N.S., Tuesday against the Saskatoon Stars (West), Wednesday against Northern Selects, N.S. (Atlantic) and Thursday against the Brampton Canadettes (Ontario).

The semifinals are Friday and the medal finals are Saturday.

The Slash are 28-10-1 overall as winners of the Final Frozen Four provincial final in the Alberta Female Hockey League and the Pacific Region series with 10 returning players in the lineup.

Last year the Slash was the first Alberta team to win the Esso Cup and the first team to finish 7-0 in the tournament.

Spring Flip

The annual Spring Flip is underway for 214 competitors at the St. Albert Gymnastics Club.

The Junior Olympic 1 to 8 level meet consists of the six sessions. Today’s start times are 8:45 a.m. for JO level 2, 11 a.m. for JO level 3 (2003-08), 1:45 p.m. for JO level 3 (2009-11) and 4 (2008-10) and 4:15 p.m. for JO level 4 (2004-07). Sunday’s times are 8:45 a.m. for JO level 1 and 10:15 a.m. for JO level 6, 7 and 8.

Fourteen clubs are represented at the meet.

Admission is $7 for 12 years and older, $5 for six to 11 and under five is free.
