Junior high rugby
The Lorne Akins Gators swept the Tier I finals at the Great Edmonton Junior High 7s Rugby Championships last weekend at Ellerslie Rugby Park. The Gators outlasted the William D. Cuts Crusaders for the boys and Riverbend for the girls as Lorne Akins continued its Tier I domination since the tournament’s inception in 2012.
The lady Gators were a relatively young team with several Grade 7s but improved during the short season. The boys, however, were more veteran in nature and according to some longtime coaches at Lorne Akins the team was one of the fastest and most athletic in 30 years.
The top Gators included Mei-Lyn Whitnack for the girls and Holden Selin for the boys.
The Gators were represented by five of their seven teams in the Tier I and II playoff tournament and the format was two flat-out seven-minute halfs on the full field. All the teams played four or five pool matches and three playoff matches.
Although the 2018 season started late due to poor spring weather, all the tournament teams had a chance to hone their skills during several Wednesday nights of league play at schools in St. Albert and Edmonton, as well as the annual Gators 7s tournament on May 12 at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The St. Albert Public and Catholic schools were well represented in the tournament. The Richard S. Fowler Falcons, under coach Aaron Adams, were a competitive new side in the league and playoffs this year. The Crusaders, with Angus (Gus) MacDonald in charge, were a highly-skilled side in all categories. The Sir George Simpson Voyageurs with Katharine Campbell as the coach, were strong contenders for medals. Shawn (Andy) Andersen was also instrumental in the Gators carrying on a long tradition of podium results.
