Ken Ann Cup

A trip to the provincial final is on the line today between the St. Albert Rugby Football Club and the Nor’Westers in the Alberta Cup premier men’s playoffs.

Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park and admission is $5 for ages 16 and older.

The winner of the Ken Ann Cup north final advances to the Labatt’s Cup championship next Saturday against the Calgary Rams (12-1) or Calgary Hornets (8-5) at 4:30 p.m. in Calgary.

The Nor’Westers are the defending champions and the third Labatt’s Cup in a row for SARFC was celebrated in 2016.

The Nor’Westers are 4-1 in the last five tilts with SARFC and the wins were 38-36 in 2016, 57-26 and 51-3 last year and 46-17 and 33-15 this year.

SARFC knocked off the Nor’Westers 41-38 in the 2016 Ken Ann Cup, the fourth triumph in as many years and the eighth in nine straight appearances in the north final.

This year the Nor’Westers and SARFC finished as the top two north teams in the Alberta Cup table and in the north semifinals in the snow and cold Sept. 15 the scores were 34-12 for SARFC (6-5) against the Strathcona Druids (5-6) and 24-11 for the Nor’Westers (10-1) against the Lep/Tigers (4-7).

Sabres games

The puck drops this weekend for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Today’s home opener against the SSAC Southgate Lions starts at 12 noon at Akinsdale Arena and Sunday’s game time is 5:30 p.m. against the host Sherwood Park Flyers.

The Sabres closed out the pre-season with a record of 3-3.

Levi Fesyk and Zakk Makeiff, a pair of forwards, are returnees from the 2018 provincial finalists, 9-4 in the playoffs after going 25-3-8 as the second-best team in the regular season.

Fesyk is the Sabres’ captain this season.

Metro volleyball

The metro Edmonton high school volleyball season is underway and Monday’s matches in St. Albert are hosted by the Bellerose Bulldogs and St. Albert Skyhawks.

The division two Bulldogs play the O’Leary Spartans at 5 p.m. for the women and 6:30 p.m. for the men.

Last year’s Bulldogs won the division two men’s championship and the women’s team finished as the division three semifinalists after placing first in league play.

The division one women’s match between the Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues starts at 5:30 p.m. at the SkyDome.
