The St. Albert Merchants streaked into Friday’s game against the Stony Plain Flyers as winners of four in a row to start off the Capital Junior B Hockey League season. The score against the Flyers (3-3) from Glen Hall Centennial Arena was unavailable at press time. Sunday the Merchants face-off against the Edmonton Royals (3-1) at 8 p.m. at Confederation Arena. The fourth victory for The Blue Guys was 4-1 against the Edmonton Mustangs (0-4-1) Wednesday at Bill Hunter Arena. The Merchants were led offensively by Matt Havens with a pair, singles from Jack Langenhahn and Connor Tupala and two helpers by Brenden Passek. Shots were 34-33 for the Merchants. Brandon Boughen, who played junior C last season, made his first start for the Merchants and was scored upon 40 seconds into the contest. After four games, Havens led the team in goals with three and was the co-leader in points with Passek with seven apiece. The Merchants also averaged a respective 2.50 goals against after a porous defensive 4.55 GAA campaign in 2016/17.

Sabres score 10

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres racked up 10 goals for the second time this season in Thursday’s shutout of the KC Squires. Tyson Greenway, the only returning Sabre on the roster, and Jaxon Dube tallied twice against KC (1-3) at Akinsdale Arena. Graeme Hampton, Zachry Desranleau, Zakk Makeiff, Dylan Leslie, Palmer Strang and Chase Visser also scored and Kaleb West added three assists. Shots were, believe it or not, 71-15 and netminder Carson Ironside started his first game with the Sabres. Last month, the Sabres outscored the MLAC Scott Pump (0-4) by a margin of 10-1 as David Saunders, Ethan Sundar and Greenway led the way with a pair each. Friday the Sabres (3-0-1) played CAC Lehigh Cement (2-1) but the score was unavailable at press time. Sundar is the Sabres’ top point producer after four games with nine and Greenway’s six goals are a team high. Next weekend the Sabres are in Calgary for games against the Bisons (4-0-2) and Flames (3-3).
