Junior B exhibition
The last exhibition game for the St. Albert Merchants before the Capital Junior B Hockey League regular season begins is Sunday against the Sherwood Park Knights.Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Merchants have eight defencemen, 15 forwards and three netminders remaining in camp after last weekend’s 4-3 loss in Sherwood Park and 8-6 win over the Edmonton Royals at Coronation Arena.
League play starts with the Sept. 21 home-opener against the Beverly Warriors at 8 p.m. as the Merchants unveil their 35th anniversary edition jerseys.
The pre-game tailgate festivities at 6:30 p.m. include the Original Joe’s charity food truck providing hamburgers and hotdogs to the first 150 fans in exchange for donations to the Diabetes Research Foundation of Canada.
The classic car winners at this year’s Rock’n August event in St. Albert will also be on display.
This season also marks the Kids in the Crowd initiative at all home games for the opportunity to participate in meet-and-greet autograph sessions with the players.
Minor Merch winners will also join the players during the singing of the national anthem and will receive a free pizza coupon.
Kids in the Crowd tickets are available at school offices in St. Albert for free child admission when accompanied by a paying adult ($5 for adults and $2 for seniors).

Ackroyd in Estonia
St. Albert golfer Connor Ackroyd is teeing it up for Canada in the Nordic Junior Team matches in Estonia.Ackroyd, 18, is joined by Will Holan of the Blackhawk Golf Club, Colby Friedrich of the North Battleford Golf & Country Club and Griffin Wilson of the Elmwood Golf & Country Club in Swift Current on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour lineup.
Matches will be played against Finland, Sweden and Estonia, the defending champion, at Parnu Bay Golf Links in Tahkuranna, Parnumaa, Estonia, starting today and ending next Saturday.
Ackroyd had a solid season on the Maple Leaf junior tour this summer, including a 13th-place tie in the junior male division at the International Players Championship in mid-August with a three-day total of 231 (80-78-73) at Fairmont Jasper Place Lodge Golf Club.
The member of the MacEwan University Griffins' golf team and Windermere Golf & Country Club also competed in the CN Future Links Pacific and Western championships.
Last year, the Paul Kane High School graduate was the silver medallist at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association championship with a score of 147 (72-75) at The Links in Spruce Grove and Stony Plain Golf Course.
Alberta Fall Series
The Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club hosted 38 junior males and females in the Canadian Junior Golf Association-sanctioned Alberta Fall Series event last weekend.The competitors included 12 from St. Albert and Sturgeon County.
Evan Matty of St. Albert was the top U19 junior male with a two-day score of 144 (71-73).
The runner-up was Will Holan of Edmonton at 148 (73-75).
Belle Brezovski of St. Albert finished first in the U15 bantam female division at 174 (91-83), four strokes ahead of Kalee Seto of Edmonton at 178 (87-91)
In the U15 bantam male division, Aidyn Hutchinson (74-75) of St. Albert and Jayden Bar (77-72) of Calgary tied for second at 149.
The winner was Mitchell Shaigec of Edmonton at 147 (73-74).
Brooke Brezovski of St. Albert placed third among the U19 junior females at 158 (76-82).
Jenna Bruggeman of Edmonton carded the winning score of 149 (74-75).
