Jiu-Jitsu results
A trio of competitors from the Hayabusa Training Centre Ltd. in Campbell Business Park returned home as medal winners from the Pan IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championships last weekend in Irvine, Calif.Nancy Ma, a master 3 purple belt and mother of two, and Shaun Holmstrum, a brown belt, were gold medallists in their respective weight divisions and Luke Harris, a black belt, was the silver medallist in his weight class.
Harris and Holmstrum were also silver medallists in the open weight class where they combine all the medallists from each division.
Harris, the gold medallist in the super heavyweight 40 to 45 age division at the 2018 Europeans in Lisbon, Portugal, had eight difficult matches and beat a 300-pound competitor who was ranked 10th in the world.
On tap next for Harris is the European No-Gi Championships and the Rome Open in Italy.
SLAM at provincials
The St. Albert SLAM were represented by 10 teams at the Youth Provincials last weekend at Saville Community Sports Centre and the following were awarded medals.Bantam Boys B: SLAM Walter – silver.
Bantam Girls B: SLAM Guppy – silver
Midget Girls B: SLAM Walters – silver.
Midget Girls A: SLAM Froment – bronze.
Provincials were hosted by Basketball Alberta and Edmonton Youth Basketball Association.
In the EYBA league playoffs, SLAM Guppy and SLAM Walter finished first, SLAM Froment placed second and SLAM Walters was third.
U14 Indoor soccer
Team Wood and Team Bennett ended the U14 girls’ indoor season with podium results for the St. Albert Soccer Association.In Tier 5, Wood was first and Bennett placed second at the provincial inter-cities last weekend in Calgary after Bennett and Wood finished first and second, respectively, at cities.
