Medals for Harris

Luke Harris of the Hayabusa Training Centre Ltd. in Campbell Business Park continued his dominance in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation circuit as a multiple medallist last weekend in Rome, Italy.

Harris, 40, was a awarded gold at the Rome Open in the black-belt master 3 super heavyweight division and the open class, a division featuring all the black-belt medallists.

In the European No-Gi Championship, Harris was the gold-medal winner in the black-belt master 3 ultra-heavyweight division and bronze medallist in the open class.

No-Gi is grappling without the traditional jiu-jitsu uniform. Competitors wear shorts and rash guard and you are not allowed to grab your opponent’s clothing.

Among the victories for Harris, a product of the St. Albert Judo Club and a St. Albert Catholic High School alumnus, were a pair against Renato (Babalu) Sobral, a retired Brazilian wrestler and UFC fighter.

Harris, the gold medallist in the super heavyweight 40 to 45 age division at the 2018 European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, was also a silver medallist in his weight class and open weight class at last month’s Pan Championships earlier this month in Irvine, Calif.
