Sabres at home
The last home game before the playoffs for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres is against MLAC Scott Pump tonight in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.Puck drop is 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The nitro division Sabres (22-3-8) are first in the north conference and tied with the Airdrie Xtreme (23-4-6) for second overall behind the Calgary Bisons (27-3-4) in the AMBHL. MLAC (4-26-2) is fifth in the nitro standings.
The Sabres close out the regular season this weekend in Grande Prairie with two games against the Storm (15-17-2).
The best-of-three nitro semifinal against the fourth-place SSAC Southgate Lions (11-15-7) is tentatively slated to start Tuesday in St. Albert.
The Sabres are 2-0-2 against SSAC in league play.
The first loss since the 4-1 setback to CAC Lehigh Cement (19-12-3) Oct. 23 for the Sabres, undefeated in 22 games at 16-0-6, was Saturday’s 2-1 decision against the Oil Kings (16-9-8) in Leduc.
Jaxon Dube’s 19th goal of the season in the second period knotted the score against the top team in the charger north division.
Shots were 45-28 for the Sabres and Carson Ironside (11-3-3, 1.80 GAA) was in net.
Seniors curling
The Alberta men’s and women’s senior (50-plus) championships start today at the Coaldale Granite Curling Club for the Jennifer Scott rink of St. Albert.Scott’s lineup of Anne Lopushinsky, Gwyneth Turner and Diane Greening qualified as the Northern Alberta Curling Association A-event winners last month at the Thistle.
The men’s northern qualifiers with St. Albert connections include rinks skipped by Mark Johnson (Gary Greening, Doug Marks and Lance Dealy) of the Crestwood in A and Wade White (Barry Chwedoruk, Dan Holowaychuk and George White) of Lac La Biche in C.
The White foursome, with Holowaychuk as a St. Albert Curling Club wall of fame member at second, are the defending national champions and will represent Canada at worlds, April 21 to 28 in Oestersund, Sweden.
The 2018 nationals are March 24 to 29 in Stratford, Ont.
Dynamyx meet
The Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert hosts its annual invitational meet Saturday at the Campbell Business Park facility.The competition consists of sessions at 8:50 a.m. for Junior Olympic 6 and 7 level athletes, 12:20 p.m. for Junior Olympic 3 and 5 and 3:50 p.m. for Junior Olympic 4.
More than 100 athletes from 10 clubs, including 22 Dynamyx athletes, are entered.
