Forfeits this week determined the provincial playdown results for the St. Albert Impact in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.St. Albert Impact 4 (Murphy) is the second EDSA rep for the Tier 1 women’s tournament in Calgary next weekend after division 2A FC Excelsior 2 declined to play in the provincial qualifier against the division 1A team.
The Impact will join division 1A FC Exelsior 1 at provincials as both teams won their respective first-round playdown matches: 5-4 for the Impact against division 1B Wind United and Excelsior 1 edged Excelsior 2 by a score of 1-0.
Excelsior 1 (11-2-1, 41 GF/17 GA) and the Impact (10-2-2, 63 GF/22 GA) finished first and second, respectively, in the division 1A table for Tier 1 playdown berths.
The division 2A Impact men opted out of the Tier 2 provincial qualifier against FC Santos after receiving a forfeit win against division 2B FC Waryaa.
Santos (9-4-1, 36 GF/22 GA) and the Impact (8-4-2, 35 GF/20 GA) were the top two division 2A teams in league play.
Santos lost the Tier 2 playdown opener 2-1 to division 2B Punjab United, and both teams will represent the EDSA at provincials next weekend in Calgary.
Minor football
Week 2 in the Capital District Minor Football Association kicks off this weekend for St. Albert’s bantam and peewee teams.The senior varsity bantam Palmer 49ers visit the Tier I provincial champion Sherwood Park Rams today at 12:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills.
Last year’s 49ers lost only two games and both were against the Rams, including the CDMFA Tier I final.
The 49ers won their season-opener 48-6 against the Millwoods Grizzlies.
The junior varsity bantam Fury huddle up Sunday against the Edmonton Seahawks at 5:45 p.m. at Clarke Stadium.
The Fury started the season with a 26-6 victory over the Fort Saskatchewan Falcons.
The junior varsity peewee Colts and Beaumont Bears hook up Sunday at 1:45 p.m. at Millwoods Field.
The Colts dropped their first game by a score of 13-7 to the Falcons.
The senior varsity peewee Riders are in Fort Saskatchewan today to battle the Rams at 9:30 a.m.
The Riders are coming off a 38-6 decision against the Grizzlies. The halftime score was 18-0 and on the last play of the game the Grizzlies scored from one-yard out on the quarterback bootleg after 30 yards of penalties kept their drive going.
James Hill completed six of 11 passes for 120 yards and racked up 165 yards on 13 carries for five touchdowns. Joshua Mah also rushed for a 35-yard TD while gaining 104 yards overall on eight carries.
Aiden Bradford was the top receiver with three receptions for 60 yards.
On defence, the leading tacklers with four apiece were Mah, Hill, Braxton Turner and Matty Lappierre.
Sacks by nose tackle Cohen Bernas and Mah, a defensive end, set up the Riders in good field position in the fourth quarter for Hill to scamper 40 yards on the option run for his fifth TD and Jamie Clark punched in the conversion.
A catch-and-run by slotback Hayden LeBlanc of 30-plus yards paved the way for the team’s first TD as Hill ran in the one-yard sneak.
In the third quarter, Alex Braden pulled off a key first-down conversion catch on third and long and Bradford hauled in a long throw that led to a 30-yard TD by Hill.
Ball hockey
The fifth annual Douglas Deacon Memorial Classic ball hockey tournament is good to go Sept. 6.The fun tournament runs 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Transitions at 365 Carleton Drive in Campbell Business Park.
The event helps provide community awareness for people with developmental disabilities.

The tournament was established by Daniel Deacon in memory of his brother, Douglas, who died in 2011 at the age of 34.
Funds raised will go towards the St. Albert Special Olympics and Humboldt Broncos Hockey Club.
