Impact provincial playdown matches, U13 westerns and women’s rugby

Division 1A Impact

A victory tonight by St. Albert Impact 4 (Murphy) would punch the division 1A women’s team ticket to provincials.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex between the Impact (11-2-2, 68 GF/26 GA) and Monday’s loser between division 1A FC Excelsior 1 (11-2-1, 41 GF/17 GA) and division 1B FC Excelsior 2 (12-1-1, 44 GF/8 GA). The score was unavailable at press time.

The FC Excelsior teams were division leaders in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

On the line tonight is the second EDSA berth at Tier 1 provincials, Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at Calgary.

The Impact advanced into the playdown final with Monday’s 5-4 decision against division 1B Wind United (8-5-2, 32 GF/22 GA) at ESA Complex. Both teams placed second in their respective division tables.

The Impact built up a 5-1 lead early in the second half but ran into some tough luck as Wind United worked its way back into the match.

Brittany Kindzierski potted three goals for 26 on the season after winning the EDSA division 1A Golden Boot scoring title with 23.

Kindzierski also finished tied for fifth for the premier division Golden Boot with 10 goals as the second-highest scorer on the Impact 1 (Spaidal) team that qualified for the premier provincials during the September long weekend in Calgary.

Shyanne Walton and Madison Kindzierski notched singles and Kathleen Lang was in net for the Impact, who will play Impact 3 (Murphy) in Saturday’s promotion playoff for premier division status in the 2019 outdoor season. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Impact 3 (4-12-2, 23 GF/59 GA) placed eighth in the 10-team premier table.

Division 2A Impact

The division 2A St. Albert Impact men are playing for a provincial berth tonight at ESA Complex.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. against Monday’s loser between division 2A Santos FC (9-4-1, 36 GF/22 GA) and division 2B Punjab United (10-2-2, 48 GF/23 GA), the top teams in their Edmonton District Soccer Association tables. The score was unavailable at press time.

A 3-0 forfeit by division 2B FC Waryaa (9-3-2, 40 GF/17 GA) put the Impact in position to win the second EDSA berth at Tier 2 provincials, Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 in Calgary.

The Impact (10-4-2, 38 GF/20 GA) won eight and tied two in the last 10 matches to finish second in league play.

Sam Smith-Ackerl led the Impact in scoring in league play with seven goals.

U13 westerns

The St. Albert Cardinals were awarded silver medals at the U13 Baseball Canada westerns in Brandon.

The Cardinals finished 3-2 at the eight-team tournament after the 7-3 loss to British Columbia in Sunday’s final.

The undefeated B.C. squad scored three runs in the first, highlighted by a home run, to make it 3-1 and in the sixth pushed three runs across after the Cardinals closed the gap to 4-3 with a pair in the top of five.

Hits were 5-1 for B.C. as the Cardinals struck out 10 times and reached base six times on walks.

Cam Bergstrom produced the only hit for the Cardinals and as the starting pitcher allowed four hits and four runs, three earned, over five innings while striking out seven and walking four.

Keenan Parker worked the sixth inning.

Parker and Eric Machej were credited with RBIs and Bergstrom, Carter Moffat and Jakob Reiniger scored runs.

The Cardinals committed three errors, compared to one for B.C.

In pool play, the Baseball Alberta peewee AAA Tier I silver medallists lost 6-5 to Regina (Sask. 1) and posted wins of 18-8 against North Winnipeg (Man. 2) and 13-6 against the Brandon hosts before edging the Red Deer Braves (Alta. 2) 6-5 in the semifinals.

Red Deer, the third-place finisher at provincials, went on to beat Brandon 9-4 in the bronze-medal game.

Luke Buchanan and Michael Yusypchuk led the Cardinals in hits with six apiece.

Yusypchuk drove in a team-high nine runs and Machej had six RBIs. Machej also scored nine runs.

Rugby match

The St. Albert Rugby Football Club and the Lep/Tigers hook up in tonight’s division two women’s match.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at the Lep/Tigers.

Third-place SARFC (5-1) is nine points back of the Lep/Tigers (7-0) in the Edmonton Rugby Union table.

The two clubs scrummed down in the Alberta premier women’s semifinal Saturday and the host Lep/Tigers won 52-7.

In the premier fixtures, SARFC (4-5-1) lost 72-10 to the Lep/Tigers (10-0), the defending provincial champions.
