Sabres rattle KC
The third win of the season for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres was against the nitro north division leader in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.Goals in the opening 10 minutes by Carter Kowalyk and Marko Stolic at even strength and Connor Dale’s unassisted shorthanded effort pushed the Sabres past the KC Squires 3-1 Wednesday at Akinsdale Arena.
Liam Cochrane added two assists for a team-leading 16 points in 13 games.
Shots were 12-6 in the first and 29-20 in total for the Sabres with Teagan Kendrick (1-6-2, 3.01 GAA) in net.
The second victory in a row and third in 10 games lifted the Sabres (3-8-3) into a fourth-place tie with CAC Lehigh Cement (4-11-1) in the nitro standings with two games in hand.
The Sabres and KC (10-6-1) play again Monday at 8 p.m. at Clareview Arena.
Today at 2:30 p.m. the Sabres face off against the host Leduc Oil Kings (9-3-2), third in the charger north division.
Sharks games
The midget elite St. Albert Sharks return to action this weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Game times are 7:45 p.m. tonight against the North Central Impact (1-7-1) at Go Auto Arena and 11:45 a.m. Sunday against the Edmonton Pandas (1-4-2) at Bill Hunter Arena.
The last AFHL contest for the Sharks (5-4) was 3-1 against the Impact on Nov. 17 in St. Albert to end a three-game losing streak and two of the setbacks were by shutouts.
Katie Charko leads the Sharks in scoring with five goals and 10 points, followed by Libby Langenhahn’s four goals and six points and Kirsten Legge’s five points.
Last weekend the Sharks finished the Wickfest tournament in Calgary as the top team in the midget elite 2 division.
Round robin scores were 4-2 against the Weyburn Golden Wings, 8-1 against the Pandas, 8-2 against the Surrey Falcons and the 6-2 loss to Calgary Fire White.
The final was 2-1 over Fire White with Marissa Steinke and Aidan Soltis scoring and Laney Pasemko in net.
In league play, Fire White (9-0) of the AFHL south division beat the Sharks 3-1 Nov.10 in St. Albert.
The 2018 AFHL provincial final also ended with Fire White winning 2-1 against the Sharks in Calgary.
In the round robin at Wickfest, Soltis produced six points while Langenhahn and Steinke recorded five apiece. Langenhahn and Charko both potted a team-high four goals.
AFHL Raiders
Sunday the bantam elite St. Albert Raiders have a home game on tap in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Puck drop is 8 p.m. against the North Central Impact (7-3) at Mark Messier Arena.
Friday the Raiders (3-8-2) and Sherwood Park Royals (9-0) faced off in St. Albert but the score was unavailable at press time.
The Raiders had lost six in a row before last weekend’s series in Grande Prairie. Results were the 3-1 win and 2-1 overtime loss to the Storm (2-10).
The Raiders are led offensively this season by Kali MacDonald and Paige Ring with three goals and two assists apiece.
Food bank game
The Dec. 23 game between the St. Albert Bears and St. Albert Elite Promotion Marketing Blues is also a fundraiser for the St. Albert Food Bank.Donations will be accepted for the food bank and Hunter, the Edmonton Oilers’ mascot, will be in attendance.
The Edmonton Rural Bantam AA Hockey League teams face off at 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
In the blue division of the metro conference, the Bears (8-3-2) were listed second and the Blues (4-5-2) fifth before this weekend’s slate of games.
Friday the Blues played the KC Shamrocks (6-6-2) of the red division in St. Albert and the score was unavailable at press time.
Today the Blues host SSAC Barbecue Country (7-70) of the red division at 2:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena and the Bears entertain the Sherwood Park Leafs (11-1-1), in first place in the blue standings, at 1:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Sunday the Bears visit the Lloydminster Blazers (8-3) of the white division in the rural conference at 1 p.m. in the Border City.
Meanwhile, the next game for the St. Albert Comets (2-8-5), tied for sixth in the blue division, is Wednesday against the Blues at 8:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
Liam Fitzgerald of the Comets is among the league’s highest scorers with 20 points.
Adam Browton is the top point producer for the Bears with 12 while Tyler Fitka and Kieran Strauss share the team lead for the Bears with six points apiece.
