U19AA Mission
A shootout determined the gold medallist in Sunday’s U19AA final between the St. Albert Mission and Calgary Rogue at the Central Alberta AA Ice Breaker in Lacombe.Goals were 2-1 for the Rogue as Vail Ketsa scored for the Mission after the game was deadlocked at four apiece.
The Rogue led 3-1 after the first period and made it 4-3 with 13:03 left in the last period before Lauren Miller pulled the Mission even with 10:01 to play.
Grace Maxwell and Liv Helland’s second of the game contributed to the second-half comeback.
The Mission finished 3-1-1 as silver medallists and the Rogue were 5-0 in the eight-team tournament.
In pool play, the Mission edged Calgary Rush 5-4, tied the Edmonton Elite 3-3 and defeated Zone 2 by a margin of 7-2.
The semifinal was 3-1 over Spruce Grove.
The Mission’s record is 10-7-3 after the tournament.
Ketsa led the Mission in scoring with eight goals, including the hat-trick against the Elite, and 11 points.
Helland recorded five goals and seven points, Ali Sharun had seven helpers while Brooklyn Foote tallied four times.
Ketsa, Miller and netminder Jordyn Scott are Team Alberta players for the Canada Winter Games, Feb. 13 to March 3 at Red Deer. The coaching staff includes Heather Konkin of the Mission.
U16AA Mission
St. Albert Mission netminder RJ Smith stopped all three Calgary Core shooters in Sunday’s shootout to determine the U16AA bronze medallist at the Central Alberta Ice Breaker in Lacombe.Charlotte Campbell potted the Mission’s only goal in the shootout after a scoreless overtime to make it 5-4.
In the opening period, the Core led 3-0 before Jamie Stolk and Janie Lajoie, with three seconds left, made it a one-goal contest.
Stolk and Reeve Spanakis put the Mission ahead before the Core answered with 2:24 left in the last period to force OT.
In the semifinal, the Mission lost 5-3 as Spruce Grove potted the OT winner after netting the equalizer with 45 seconds remaining.
Spanakis racked up three goals in the last period after Morgan Laporte’s marker in the first period cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Mission qualified for the semifinals of the eight-team tournament by going 2-1 in pool play. A 4-3 loss to Zone 2 was followed by wins of 6-3 against the Calgary Crew and 7-1 against the host Central Alberta Sting.
In the final, the Crew beat Spruce Grove in a shootout.
Spanakis was the Mission’s top scorer with seven goals and eight points.
Campbell finished with seven points, Kenzie McEachern found the back of the net four times and Sydney Fevin added five assists.
The Mission’s overall record is 13-7-2 after the tournament.
U14AA Mission
The St. Albert Mission placed fourth out of six U14AA teams at the Central Alberta Ice Breaker last weekend in Lacombe.In the round robin, the Mission lost 6-5 to Calgary White, 9-3 to Zone 2 and 5-0 to Calgary Red, defeated Edmonton Elite 9-2 and skated to a 4-4 draw with Sherwood Park Power.
Zone 2 won Sunday’s final 2-1 over Calgary Red.
The Mission were led offensively by Jazzi Fevin’s six goals and 12 points, while Tayte Arlinghaus notched six goals and 10 points, and Eve Starchuk chipped in with five assists and eight points.
The U14AA host team for the westerns, March 27 to 30 at Servus Credit Union Place, is 14-7-2 overall after going 1-3-1 at the Ice Breaker.
Westerns also consists of teams in the U16A, U19A and 18-plus A divisions.
The U14AA Mission were the 2018 silver medallists in Saskatoon.
