Humboldt memorial tournament
A memorial tournament for the four St. Albert Humboldt Broncos players is underway this weekend at the Mark Messier Arena. The four teams are named after Logan Hunter, Jaxon Joseph, Conner Lukan and Stephen Wack, who were killed in a bus accident on April 6 near Tisdale, Sask. Each team will be made up of each player’s close friends and family.
Sixteen players and staff were killed in the collision between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s team bus and a semi-trailer at a highway intersection. Thirteen others were injured.
The tournament kicked off on Friday night with opening ceremonies starting at 7 p.m. Joseph’s dad Chris and Hunter’s mom Shauna Nordstrom spoke at the event and a ceremonial puck drop was held between two surviving Broncos players, Derek Patter and Tyler Smith.
Before the tournament even began the organizers had raised $30,000 through player fundraising and sponsorships. Proceeds will be donated to the St. Albert Humboldt Remembrance Committee and the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.
On Saturday, games start at 10 a.m. between Team Wack and Team Hunter. The final game will be played from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
