The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders are the No. 1 team in the north division of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League after extending their undefeated streak to six games.
The Raiders (9-7-2) are also 6-4-2 on home ice after defeating the AMHL champion Leduc Oil Kings 5-2 Saturday and tying the Calgary Buffaloes 2-2 Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.
Zach Carlson’s seventh goal of the season was the equalizer halfway through the second period against the Buffaloes (14-2-2), ranked second in the south division.
Erik Boers (power play) also scored.
Evan Fradette (2-4-2, 1.96 GAA) stopped a game-high 34 shots and the Raiders generated 20.
Mitch Reidy (7-3, 1.94 GAA) was tested 19 times by Leduc (4-10-4) in the team’s third win in a row.
The Raiders are averaging 2.05 goals against per game as the top defensive team in the north.
Boers, Jacob Charko, Jacob Hiemstra, Cam Aucoin (shorthanded) and Ryan Harke scored as the Raiders registered 43 shots. Aucoin also picked up two assists.
The Raiders travel this weekend to play the Airdrie Bisons (5-10-2) Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Calgary Flames (10-4-3) Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
Jets cruising
The Morinville Jets skate into Friday’s game as winners of four of their last five games in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Puck drop is 8:30 p.m. against the Stony Plain Flyers (10-9-2) at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena.
The Jets (12-6-1) are one point behind the second-place St. Albert Merchants (13-8) in the west division after posting two victories following the 2-1 loss to the Merchants on Nov. 18 at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
The Jets closed out the team's November schedule with a record of 6-2 in Friday’s 7-2 decision against the Spruce Grove Regals (1-16-2) in Morinville.
Special teams produced goals by Jaron Coles and Dean Jones on the power play and shorthanded efforts 38 seconds apart by Brett Kampjes and Lee Gadoury in the third period.
Coles, Cooper Kenda and Scott Wolosyhn also struck at even strength.
Brett Dubuc chipped in with four assists and Gadoury had two helpers.
Dubuc is the CJHL leader in goals with 24 and is tied for fourth in points with 42 in 19 games.
Shots were 34-23 for the Jets as Luke Hall (15 saves in 43 minutes) and Colton Kucher (eight saves in 17 minutes) let in one goal apiece.
Sunday the Jets host the CJHL champion Wetaskiwin Icemen (15-4-1) at 7:15 p.m.
Slash marks
The St. Albert Slash rebounded from a rare shutout loss to maintain their first-place standing in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Libby Langenhahn tallied twice and Vanessa Verbitsky, Tyra Meropoulis, Mckenzie Hewett (power play) and Allison Reich also scored after the Slash (11-4) gave up the first goal in the 6-1 win against the Edmonton Pandas (1-12-2) Sunday at Bill Hunter Arena.
Reich, Kirsten Legge and Shyla Kirwer drew two assists apiece.
The shot count was 36-19 for the Slash and Camryn Drever (5-2, 1.87 GAA) was between the pipes.
The day before in Red Deer, Brianna Sank (6-2, 0.87 GAA) faced 28 shots and the lone goal was scored at 14:48 of the opening period by the hometown Chiefs (9-2-3).
The Slash (11-4) were credited with 23 shots in the 1-0 loss.
The Slash and Chiefs face-off again Friday at 8:15 p.m. in Red Deer.
The next home game for the 2017 Esso Cup midget AAA champions is Saturday against the second-place Rocky Mountain Raiders (10-4-2) at 7:45 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
Flyers flying
The St. Albert Flyers returned home from a two-game road trip against south division teams as co-leaders in the north division of the Alberta Minor MIdget AAA Hockey League.
The Flyers (10-3-3) share top spot with the Sherwood Park Squires (11-3-1) after doubling the SEAC Tigers 4-2 and tying the Lethbridge Hurricanes 2-2.
Mathieu Gautier’s second goal of the contest, a power-play marker at 5:57 of the third period, was the game winner against the Tigers (2-12-1) in Brooks.
Taige Harding and Ryley Morgan also scored and Maddux Nollski had three assists.
Shots were 42-21 for the Flyers in support of netminder Ethan Barwick.
The Flyers salvaged a point against Lethbridge (11-2-2), the defending AMMHL champions who are tied for second in the south, as Ethan McKinley and Robert Kincaid notched singles in the third. Ryland Strauss assisted on both goals.
Barwick (7-2-1, 2.41 GAA) was in net as the Flyers held the upper hand in shots at 47-33.
The Flyers are undefeated in five games when they host the SSAC Bulldogs (3-8-2) Saturday at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Sunday’s game against the Lloydminster Bobcats (5-6-3) starts at 11:30 a.m. in the Border City.
Shark attack
The midget elite St. Albert Sharks bit off their eighth consecutive win to remain undefeated in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Brooklyn Schroeder’s power-play goal at 8:16 of the third period was the winner In Sunday’s 3-2 outcome against the host Sherwood Park Fury.
After two periods the score was knotted at two apiece.
Aidan Soltis and Jessica Kormysh found the back of the net in the first frame.
Annika Neset finished with a pair of assists.
The Sharks outshot the Fury 28-23 and Holly Borrett (5-0, 1.20 GAA) tended the twine.
The Sharks (8-0) and Fury (6-5) are first and second, respectively, in the north division.
The Sharks are in Grande Prairie this weekend for two games against the Peace Country Storm (5-3).
