Pat Gora stopped 20 shots as the St. Albert Raiders blanked the Maple Leafs 2-0 Wednesday in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
It was the first shutout for Gora (4-4-1, 2.26 GAA) this season and the second in three games for the top defensive team in the north division.
In the third period Luigi Naccarato assisted on Nicholas Sutter’s goal and scored into an empty net.
The Raiders registered 21 shots against the Leafs (6-13-3).
The win was the fifth in seven games for the Raiders (11-7-3).
Sunday the Raiders visit the Grande Prairie Storm (6-9-4) at 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Raiders fell one point short at the cut-off mark for AMHL north teams to qualify for the 36th annual Mac’s tournament in Calgary during the holidays.
The Mac’s has been an annual tradition for the Raiders, quarter-finalists last year after reaching the semifinals the previous year.
Nate Reinhart of the St. Albert Sabres posted his third shutout and the team’s fifth this season in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over the KC Squires in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Reinhart (6-4, 2.21 GAA) was tested 25 times by the Squires (0-19-1) at Bill Hunter Arena.
Adrian Parth, Bret Mossing and Ryan Cooper scored in the first period and Josh Antunes and Evan Haimila netted goals in the third. Cooper also notched two assists.
The Sabres were credit with 26 shots overall.
Today at 4 p.m. the Sabres (8-8-3) visit the Maple Leafs (4-14-2) at Castledowns Arena.
The Sabres wrap up league play before the Christmas break at home against the Canadian Athletic Club (13-6-1) Dec. 21 at 3:45 p.m. and the Sherwood Park Flyers (10-7-2) Dec. 23 at 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The deadline to submit applications for the sixth annual John Reid Society Scholarship is Jan. 7.
Individuals who played bantam AAA for the St. Albert Sabres after the 2004/05 season, and played hockey in St. Albert for a minimum of three years, are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship.
Applicants also have to be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary education institution.

The successful applicant will be announced Jan. 16 at 7:15 p.m. during the opening ceremonies of the John Reid Memorial Tournament at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
Previous winners were Justin Kueber, Joshua Maeda, Steven Woolger, Brady McCorriston and Ryan Harrison.
The Reid scholarship was established by the parent group of the 2004/05 Sabres as a way to give back to the community. It challenges players to grow academically into becoming educated and contributing members of society in the same way Reid contributed to the St. Albert sports scene as a mentor and coach, while at the same time displaying a positive attitude.
The tournament was renamed in Reid’s memorial in 2004.

The third loss in six games for the St. Albert Slash was Wednesday’s 6-0 setback to the Edmonton Thunder in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
The five-time reigning AMMFHL champions outshot the Slash 41-15 at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
Earlier in the season the Thunder (15-3-2) shut out the Slash 7-0 in St. Albert.
Sunday the Slash (5-11-5) host the Lloydminster Steelers (9-7-3) at 2:45 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
The Slash are 2-6-2 on home ice.
