The St. Albert Merchants moved into first place in the west division after depositing their fourth win in five games in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

The first victory after five losses against the rival Morinville Jets, dating back to last season, was Saturday’s 2-1 decision at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

The night before at Akinsdale Arena the Merchants lit up the North Edmonton Red Wings with six goals in the second period and won 9-3.

The Merchants (4-1) and Jets (3-1-1) are ranked first and second, respectively, in the standings.

Jake Behiels was the top-scoring Merchant after four games with four goals and three assists.

Nicolas Addessi racked up two goals and two assists against the Red Wings (1-3-1) for six points in four games.

The next home game is Friday against the Stony Plain Flyers (0-4) at 8 p.m.

Sunday at 3:30 p.m. the Merchants play the Strathcona Bruins (3-2) at Fultonvale Arena.

Meanwhile, the Jets visit the Beaumont Chiefs (3-2) Friday at 8:30 p.m. Sunday’s home game against the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks (2-3) starts at 6:45 p.m.

Dalen Paul led all Jets in scoring after four games with six goals, including three on the power play, and seven assists. Tyler Kampjes was the team’s top playmaker with five assists.

Three current players and one former member of the St. Albert Slash were named to the Team Alberta roster for the U18 national women’s championship next month in Saguenay, Que.

Slash forwards Jessica Kampjes of Bon Accord and twins Ashley and Deanna Morin of Fort Saskatchewan, along with forward Karly Heffernan of the Edge Mountaineers, were selected to the 20-player line-up.

Ashley and Kampjes share the team lead in points with nine in four games. Ashley also scored her team-high sixth goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the Calgary Bruins (3-1-2) in Calgary.

Deanna sniped her first goal of the season, and sixth point in four games, in Sunday’s 8-5 win against the Highwood Raiders (0-5-1) in High River.

Kampjes is second in goals with five after potting a pair against the Raiders.

Charity Price also tallied twice in the win. Nicole Simmonds, Sabrina Flemming and Kate Lumley netted singles. Kaelin Klim (four GA on nine shots) and Emily Mitchell split time in net. Mitchell stopped 20 shots against the Bruins.

The Slash are 4-1-1 in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. Next weekend they play the Medicine Hat Hounds (4-0) twice in Vauxhall.
