The Boston Bruins have signed forward Jarome Iginla to a one-year contract through the 2013-2014 season. Iginla’s contract comes with a base salary of $1.8 million and incentives worth $4.2 million. After 16 seasons with the Calgary Flames, the 36-year-old from St. Albert was traded to Pittsburgh in March.
He played 15 playoff games before the Penguins were knocked out of the Stanley Cup race by the Bruins in the Eastern Conference final. He became an unrestricted free agent July 5.
The former midget AAA Raider is a two-time 50-goal scorer and has won the Rocket Richard Trophy twice as the league's top goal scorer.
The Colorado Avalanche have signed St. Albert’s Nick Holden to a two-year contract. The 26-year-old defenceman played in two games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, and 73 with the Blue Jackets’ American Hockey League affiliate Springfield Falcons where he led Falcons’ defencemen with nine goals and 39 points.
Holden was an unrestricted free agent.
The St. Albert Catholic High School graduate featured on St. Albert’s Skating Wall of Fame made his NHL debut with Columbus in the 2010-2011 season and has appeared in seven NHL games.
Team Brick Alberta wound-up in fourth place in their division with a 4-2 record at The Brick Invitational Super Novice Hockey Tournament and did not advance to the semi-finals. The Toronto Bulldogs beat the B.C. Junior Canucks 3-1 in the tournament final to earn their third consecutive championship title.
