The Edmonton Royals eliminated the Morinville Jets with three straight wins to take the best-of-seven semifinal 4-2 in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Wednesday in game four the Royals broke a 4-4 tie with 13:48 remaining in regulation time and added an empty net goal in the 6-4 victory at Bill Hunter Arena.
Friday in Morinville the Royals ended game five with four consecutive goals in the 6-4 comeback win.
Sunday in the 4-2 series clincher the teams combined for 135 penalty minutes. A power-play goal put the Royals up 3-2 with 7:19 left in the second period.
The Jets opened the semifinal with a 2-1 overtime decision in Morinville as Dalen Paul scored the winner in the first extra period.
The Royals tied the series in game two with five unanswered goals in the last two periods to win 5-2 in Edmonton.
The Jets regained the lead by doubling the Royals 4-2 in Morinville.
Paul finished the playoffs with a team-high six goals and 11 points in nine games. Brady McCorriston added five goals and five assists in nine games and Tyler Nault had three goals and six assists in seven games.
Mike Saunders (3-1, 2.54 GAA) and Bradley Miller (2-3, 3.64 GAA) shared time in net.
In league play the Jets (24-11-3) tied the Beverly Warriors for the west division pennant and the Royals (26-10-2) finished fourth in the east division.
The Royals will now play the Spruce Grove Regals (24-12-2) in the best-of-five final. Both teams automatically advance to provincials.
The Jets have never won a league championship or qualified for provincials.
The season is over the St. Albert Slash after losing the north division final in three straight games to the Edmonton Thunder in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
Friday in game three the defending champions scored four straight goals to defeat the Slash 4-1 at Callingwood Arena.
The Slash opened the scoring in the first period on Deanna Morin’s team-leading fifth goal and 10th playoff point.
Former Slash goalie Chloe Sanderson recorded 15 saves and Emily Mitchell stopped 23 Thunder shots.
The 2011 Esso Cup national silver medallists outscored the Slash 11-4 in the series.
This is the third year in a row the Thunder eliminated the Slash in the best-of-five north final. They swept the 2010 series and last year defeated the Slash in four games.
The St. Albert Silvertips settled for silver at the Hockey Alberta bantam A female championship in Sherwood Park.
In Sunday’s final Kyrelle Skoye and Jamie Kidd scored in the 4-2 loss to the Fort Saskatchewan Fury. The Fury held period leads of 3-0 and 3-1.
The Silvertips advanced to the final with a 3-1 semifinal win against the Calgary GHC inferno. Kolby Krueger, Robyn Kormysh and Carly Chikie scored to make it 3-0 after two periods. Hannah Clark gave up the only Calgary goal at 5:19 of the third.
In the pool A round robin the Silvertips beat the Okotoks Oilers 4-1, tied Edmonton Chaos 1-1, then defeated Sherwood Park NRG 2-1 and the Beaverlodge Blades 6-3.
Kidd led the Silvertips in scoring with seven points in six games. Krueger collected a team-high five goals.
The St. Albert Sabres ended the Hockey Alberta peewee AA major provincials with a 4-0 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings in Sunday’s final in Lethbridge.
After 40 minutes the Oil Kings led 3-0.
In the semifinal the Sabres scored four unanswered goals to defeat Lloydminster 5-2. Zachary Marano knotted the count at two apiece halfway through the second period and seven seconds into the third Landon Bishop fired the game winner. Bret Mossing and Bishop rounded out the scoring. Jack Langenhahn also scored and added two assists.
In the pool A round robin the Sabres and Oil Kings battled to a 2-2 draw. Dan Lewis scored and Andrew Palladino netted the tying goal with 70 seconds to play.
The Sabres also beat the Sherwood Park Jets 4-1, crushed the Lethbridge Broncos 19-0 and tied Grande Prairie 1-1.
