The St. Albert Slash improved on last year’s 16th place finish at the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament as the B finalists last weekend at Notre Dame College.
The midget AAA female hockey team placed sixth overall out of 16 teams after losing 3-1 to the Regina Rebels.
The Slash outplayed and outchanced Regina but couldn’t put the puck in the net. It was 1-1 when the Slash were penalized with just over a minute left to play and Regina scored on the power play.
In division A pool play the Slash edged the Kootenay Wildcats 2-1, lost 7-1 to the Shaftesbury Titans and shaded the Weyburn Goldwings 3-2.
The Slash also defeated the Westman Wildcats 5-4 in playoff action.
Rebecca Wall scored the winning goal in all three games on a strong line with Kate Lumley and Charity Price.
The Slash (10-7-3) resume league play Saturday against the Spruce Grove Saints (6-12-2) at 2:15 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
The peewee A St. Albert Mission doubled the Rocky Mountain House Vipers 4-2 in the final of the 11th annual Ace Bailey Tournament last weekend in Lloydminster.
The Mission advanced to the final with a 9-1 win against the Leduc Roughnecks.
The Mission were undefeated in round-robin play, with victories of 5-2 over the Saskatoon Wild Outlaws, 4-2 over the Spruce Grove Chiefs and tied the Lloydminster Blazers 5-5.
The tournament was named in memory of Lloydminster product Garnet “Ace” Bailey, who helped the Edmonton Oil Kings win the 1966 Memorial Cup and played and scouted for the WHA and NHL Edmonton Oilers. He was the director of pro scouting with the Los Angeles Kings when he died aboard United Airlines Flight 175 when it crashed into the World Trade Center in New York during the 9/11 attacks.
The Mission plays an interlock schedule with Edmonton in peewee 2A. The team’s league record is 10-0 and is 23-4-1 overall.
The St. Albert Flyers travel Saturday to Camrose to play the Vikings at 3:15 p.m. in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
The Flyers shared second spot in the north division at 7-4-4, prior to Tuesday’s game against the Canadian Athletic Club at Akinsdale Arena. The score was unavailable at press time.
Last weekend at home the Flyers raked the Maple Leafs 5-2. Nathan Bizeau scored twice in a 25-second span in the third period to nail down the team’s third win in four games.
Brendan Kallis, Curtis Peck and Cam Mazur also connected and Mark Matsuba notched three assists. Netminder Tyler Boe (4-1-2, 2.72 GAA) also assisted on Mazur’s game winner in the second.
