The only St. Albert team to win the tournament was the 1983 Territorial Leasing Sabres.
The deadline to submit applications for the fifth annual John Reid Society Scholarship is Jan. 7.
Individuals who played bantam AAA for the St. Albert Sabres after the 2004/05 season, and played hockey in St. Albert for a minimum of three years, are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship.
Applicants also have to be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary education institution.
Visit www.johnreidmemorial.com for additional criteria and the application form.
The successful applicant will be announced Jan. 17 during the opening ceremonies of the John Reid Memorial Tournament at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
Previous winners were Justin Kueber, Joshua Maeda, Steven Woolger and Brady McCorriston.
The Reid scholarship was established by the parent group of the 2004/05 Sabres as a way to give back to the community. It challenges players to grow academically into becoming educated and contributing members of society in the same way Reid contributed to the St. Albert sports scene as a mentor and coach, while at the same time displaying a positive attitude.
The tournament was renamed in Reid’s memory in 2004.
The St. Albert Flyers skate on home ice Tuesday against CAC United Cycle in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Game time is 8:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Friday the Flyers played the Maple Leafs in Edmonton, but the score was unavailable at press time.
Earlier in the week the Flyers (6-4-4) dropped a 3-1 decision to the SSAC Bulldogs (9-4-2) in Edmonton. The top team in the north division scored three unanswered goals after Curtis Peck opened the scoring in the first period. The Flyers were outshot 39-30. In net was Pat Dea (3-2-2, 1.88 GAA).
After the loss the Flyers were 2-2-1 following their victory at the Prospects Cup tournament in Chestermere last month.
