The novice St. Albert Blades dedicated their Jan. 18 tournament victory in Tofield to the St. Albert RCMP detachment and in memory of Const. David Wynn.

Last Tuesday after practice the seven-year-old players expressed their thanks for what the RCMP members do in the community by presenting Insp. Kevin Murray with a card signed by the Blades, a team picture with their championship trophy and a plaque honouring Wynn.

One of the team’s players, a goalie, was at home in lockdown on the morning of Jan. 17 and missed the first day of the tournament.

The Blades finished 4-0 overall after defeating the home team in the final. It marked the first time this season they won four games in a row.

The St. Albert Slash host the Sherwood Park Fury on Friday night in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

The Slash (14-10-5) trail the fourth-place Fury (16-8-3) by two points with three games to play. The Fury has two games in hand.

The playoffs start Feb. 23 and the top six teams receive a first-round bye and the next four teams play a best-of-three series for spots in the best-of-five second round.

Last weekend the Slash lost 4-2 to the sixth-place Rocky Mountain Raiders (11-10-9) at DeWinton and 5-0 to the first-place Calgary Fire (22-2-4) at Max Bell Centre.

The St. Albert Flyers continue their four-game homestand in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League on Saturday night against the Calgary Rangers.

Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Flyers (20-3-5) are second in the north division and the Rangers (16-11-3) are third in the south standings.

The Flyers are 12-0-2 on home ice after posting wins of 3-1 against the Grande Prairie Storm (12-12-4) and 7-1 against the KC Centennials (4-23-2) last weekend.

Aidan Steinke, Brett Mossing and affiliate Garrett Clegg scored against the Storm and Chris Curr was peppered with 41 shots.

Two goals and one assist by affiliate Dan Lewis powered the Flyers past the Centennials.

Joshua Antunes, Samuel Smith-Ackerl, Jack Langenhahn, Tylor Jans and Leif Mattson also scored and Curr (11-1-3, 2.57 GAA) stopped 28 shots as the Flyers improved to 6-0-1 in January.

The next game for the St. Albert Lady Raiders in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League is Saturday afternoon against the Spruce Grove PAC Saints.

Puck drop is 2:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

The Raiders (9-8-2) are tied for fourth in the north division and are three points ahead of the last-place Saints (6-8-5).

Last weekend the Raiders crushed the Southeast Tigers (2-17-0) of Medicine Hat 8-0 in St. Albert.

Sophie Lalor lit the lamp five times and added one assist against the last-place team in the south. Lalor leads the team in goals with 24 and points with 33 in 19 games.

Brandy Steinman potted a pair, Makenna Schuttler also scored and Kendra Johnston had three assists.

Natasha Borrett (4-4, 3.09 GAA) stopped 17 shots for the shutout.
