The second win in a row for the St. Albert Slash in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League was against the reigning champion Wednesday.

Breanna Jones and Kyrelle Skoye scored in the first period and Hannah Clark (5-6-1, 1.59 GAA) stopped 24 shots in the 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Thunder at the Terwillegar Community Rec Centre.

The Slash were credited with 37 shots on net.

The Thunder cut the deficit in half in the opening minute of the third.

The sixth-place Slash improved to 8-10-5 and the Thunder, winners of the last seven AMMFHL titles, are last at 5-13-3.

Sunday the Slash visit the first-place Rocky Mountain Raiders (14-3-3) at 2 p.m. in DeWinton.

The St. Albert Flyers have north division games on tap in Lloydminster and Edmonton this weekend in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Flyers are in the Border City today to play the Rage (19-4-2) at 4:15 p.m. and Sunday’s contest against the Canadian Athletic Club (12-12) starts at 6:15 p.m. at Callingwood Arena.

The Flyers (13-6-4) are fifth in the north after Tuesday’s 6-2 decision against the Maple Leafs (4-6-2) at Akinsdale Arena.

Zachery Carlson tallied twice and Ryan Deets added two assists as the Flyers raised their January record to 2-1-1.

Brandon Reis, Cole Gupta, Eddie Gallagher and Brett Miller also scored.

Shots were 41-20 for the Flyers and Colton Girard (8-4-2, 1.71 GAA) was in net.

Tuesday the Flyers hook up with the first-place SSAC Bulldogs (19-1-4) at 7 p.m. at Confederation Arena.

Cale Ashcroft of St. Albert was picked by the Selects Hockey organization to join the international program with the Western Canada Selects team.

The defenceman for the peewee AA Saints attended the recent minor peewee international tryout in Calgary. More than 250 invited players from across North American competed for spots on four separate teams.

Players were selected by an independent committee of professional hockey coaches, scouts and player development specialists.

The successful participants will attend the program’s international spring training development camp and World Selects Invitational in Bolzano, Italy in April and May.

Ashcroft was a member of Team Brick Alberta at the 2014 Brick Invitational Super Novice Hockey Tournament.

Selects Hockey is an elite hockey prospect development program operated by LEGACY Global Sports. Since 2013 it has worked with top 11- to 16-year-old players across North America and Europe to expose them to all avenues of hockey in an effort to facilitate opportunities at various levels.
