The St. Albert Merchants skate tonight against the Beverly Warriors in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Game time is 8 p.m. at Clareview Arena.

Beverly (8-3-2) is second and the Merchants (7-5-1) are fourth in the west division.

The Merchants lost their home opener to Beverly 3-1.

Last weekend the Merchants dropped a 5-4 decision to the Strathcona Bruins at Akinsdale Arena and rallied in the third period to edge the Wetaskiwin Icemen 3-2 on the road.

Friday the Bruins (4-9-1) struck three times before Mason Kenny put the Merchants on the board with 18 seconds left in the first period.

Thomas Rotunda scored in the middle frame and in the third the Bruins potted a pair before Cam Mazur and Jake Mercier replied to make it a one-goal game.

Both teams capitalized twice on the power play. The Merchants were whistled for 17 infractions for 58 minutes and the Bruins had nine infractions for 26 minutes.

Shots were 40-37 for the Bruins and Ty Clelland was in net.

Sunday it was 2-1 Wetaskiwin (7-5-1) after two periods when Mazur tied it with 2:33 to play and Mike Bruni fired the winner with five ticks on the clock.

Matt Havens made it 1-1 in the second. Havens and Mazur finished with three points apiece and Casey Reid had two helpers.

The Merchants were outshot 14-4 in the third and 47-21 overall as Clelland (6-5, 3.35 GAA) backstopped the team to its second win in four games.

The Merchants are 4-1-1 on the road and 3-4 at home.

Havens is the team’s top point producer with 20 in nine games.

Friday the Merchants host the division-leading Edmonton Mustangs (11-2) at 8 p.m.

Saturday the Merchants are hosting a pub night and silent auction fundraiser at the Bourbon Room in Campbell Business Park. The auction goes from 7 to 10 p.m. and live entertainment starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Unfortunately, the annual Gord Hollett Memorial Alumni Game scheduled for Saturday afternoon was cancelled due to low interest.

The second win in three games for the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders was Sunday’s 6-3 decision against the SEAC Tigers in Medicine Hat.

Ethan Crotty was tested 53 times by the Tigers (1-7-2) and Colin Schmidt paced the attack with three goals, including a pair in the second period as the visitors outscored the home team 4-2.

Garrett Clegg, Caden Benson and Leif Mattson also scored. Mattson and Connor Tupala had two assists apiece.

The day before in Lethbridge the Raiders lost 3-1 to the Hurricanes (4-0-6). Ryan Cooper scored the only goal in the third.

Thomas Davis (42 saves) started in net and Crotty (16 saves) saw action in the third.

Schmidt and Cooper share the team lead in points with 11 apiece, followed by Mattson with 10 and nine for Benson.

Schmidt and Mattson are the co-leaders in goals with five.

This weekend in Sherwood Park the Raiders (2-8) play the Calgary Buffaloes (6-4) at 3:45 p.m. Saturday and the Calgary Northstars (3-4-2) at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The St. Albert Slash and Edmonton Thunder hook up tonight in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre.

The Slash are 2-4-3 after Friday’s 3-0 loss to the first-place Calgary Fire (6-1-3) in St. Albert and the Thunder, winners of seven-straight league championships, are last in the nine-team standings at 1-5-2.

The Slash outshot Calgary 30-24 in the team’s second shutout loss in the last five games.

The next home game is 2:30 p.m. Saturday against the Red Deer Chiefs (4-3-2), the 2015 Esso Cup national silver medallists as the host team.

Breanna Jones is the Slash’s top scorer with four points and the co-leader in goals with Kyrelle Skoye at three apiece.

The Slash also leads the league in penalty minutes with 118.

The Morinville Kings settled for a point in Saturday’s shootout loss to the Slave Lake Winterhawks in the North Central Senior AA Hockey League.

The Kings rebounded from a 5-1 deficit after 20 minutes with three goals in the second and Joshua Lafleche’s tying marker at 3:56 of the third but after a scoreless five-minute overtime they ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 shootout decision at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

The 6-5 loss dropped the Kings (1-2-1) into fifth place in the north division.

It was 2-0 in the first when Cody Issler scored for the Kings and in the middle frame Gerald Desjarlais tallied once and Riley Miller, a first-team NCHL all-star defenceman in 2014/15, connected twice.

Desjarlais and Nico Avveduti had two assists apiece. Desjarlais leads the Kings in scoring with six points.

The Kings outshot the Winterhawks (2-2) by margins of 14-8 in the first, 16-12 in the second, 20-15 in the third and 6-2 in OT for 56-37 total.

Jordan Panasiuk started in net and was replaced by Chris Sharkey after the opening period.

The Kings’ first road game is Saturday in Rocky Mountain House against the Rams (1-2) at 8:30 p.m.

Friday the St. Albert Flyers and the KC Centennials square-off in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Castledowns Arena.

The Flyers were 5-2-2 before hosting the Sherwood Park Squires (8-0-1) Tuesday. The score was unavailable at press time.

The Flyers’ first loss of the season was 2-1 to KC (5-3-3) Oct. 27 at Akinsdale Arena.

Last weekend against the Lloydminster Rage (7-2) the Flyers fell 3-2 in the Border City and won 5-2 in St. Albert.

David Cloutier and Cole Gupta scored and Mitchell Reidy (2-1-1, 1.75 GAA) stopped a game-high 40 shots in Friday’s loss.

Gupta’s hat-trick and one assist highlighted Sunday’s win. Gupta leads the Flyers in scoring with six goals and 11 points.

Keigan Miller and Brando Reis also scored. Eddie Gallagher, Mason Rezewski and Miller chipped in with two assists apiece.

The shot count was 26-18 for the Rage and Colton Girard (3-1-1, 1.20 GAA) was in net.
