The St. Albert Slash face-off against the reigning champion Edmonton Thunder tonight in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
Game time is 8 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
The Slash (12-7-3) are ranked third and the Thunder (9-5-5) are tied for fifth in the 10-team standings.
Last weekend, the Slash and Rocky Mountain Raiders (8-7-7) skated to a 3-3 draw in St. Albert.
Jenna Jewell potted a pair, including the tying goal with 5:05 to play.
Megan Webb also scored and Ashlee Drevant and Jamie Jones had two assists apiece.
Shots were 25-25 for the Raiders and Erynn Shantz (8-3-3, 1.31 GAA) was in net.
Sunday, the Slash host the Calgary Fire (14-2-4) at 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The St. Albert Flyers grabbed sole possession of second place in the north division after Sunday’s showdown with the Sherwood Park Squires in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Evan Haimila and Sam Smith-Ackerl struck on the power play and Joshua Antunes also tallied for the midget 15 Flyers (12-3-3) in the 3-1 win at Akinsdale Arena.
It was 3-0 when the Squires (12-4-2) spoiled Nate Reinhart’s shutout bid with 4:13 to play. Reinhart (7-2-2, 2.69 GAA) stopped 31 shots overall.
Friday in Camrose, the only goal in the third period was Brett Mossing’s 5-4 winner against the Red Wings (6-10-1).
Leif Mattson fired a second period hat-trick and also assisted on Aidan Steinke’s goal in the first.
Mattson leads all AMMHL scorers with 28 goals and 52 points in 18 games.
Captain Marcus Walter had two helpers and Chris Curr (5-1-1, 3.06 GAA) stopped a game-high 27 shots.
Saturday the Flyers play the visiting Lloydminster Rage (8-4-5) at 3:45 p.m.
The Morinville Kings regained first place in the North Central Hockey League in Sunday’s 12-1 thrashing of the Slave Lake Winterhawks.
The Kings (9-2) lead the Westlock Warriors (8-1) by one point in the senior AA standings after their sixth win in six road games.
The Kings were winners of six straight before losing 4-3 to Westlock on Nov. 29 at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
The teams hook up Dec. 20 at 8:30 p.m. in Morinville.
Friday’s road game against the two-time defending NCHL champion Devon Barons (7-4) was postponed.
The next game for the 2014 Hockey Alberta senior A champions is Saturday against the Rocky Rams (1-8) at 8:30 p.m. at Rocky Mountain House.
