Leif Mattson continued his torrid scoring pace for the St. Albert Flyers in Tuesday’s blowout of the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Mattson racked up three goals and three assists as the midget 15 Flyers stoned the Rangers 8-0 at Akinsdale Arena.
Mattson is the top AMMHL scorer with 25 goals and 47 points in only 16 games.
In the last five games, the explosive forward registered nine goals and seven assists as the Flyers (10-3-3) went 3-1-1.
Jack Langenhahn tallied once and picked up four assists against the Rangers (0-14-2) for 30 points in 16 games.
Captain Marcus Walter, Lucas Palladino, Tylor Jans and Sam Smith-Ackerl also scored and Walter added two helpers.
Nate Reinhart (6-2-2, 2.86 GAA) stopped 25 shots for his first shutout and the team’s second of the season.
The St. Albert Warriors, a Special Olympics’ floor hockey team, cheered the Flyers on to victory as the guests of honour. Last month, the Warriors beat the Flyers in a floor hockey game at Sir George Simpson School.
Friday the Flyers were in Camrose to play the Red Wings (5-9-1) but the score was unavailable at press time.
Sunday the Flyers host the Sherwood Park Squires (11-3-1) at 5 p.m. Both teams are battling for second place in the north division behind the SSAC Bulldogs (17-0).
The next game for the St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League is Sunday against the Red Deer Chiefs.
Faceoff is 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The women Raiders (5-5-1) are last in the north division and the Chiefs (6-5-1) are tied for first in the south standings.
Last weekend the Raiders and Sherwood Park Royals (6-3-3) skated to a 2-2 draw in St. Albert.
Sophie Lalor potted a pair and netminder Alexis Bruce (3-3-1, 2.24 GAA) faced 17 shots.
Lalor leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and 15 points in 11 games.
Applications are being accepted for the Esso Cup Legacy Female Midget Scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded based on consideration of academic achievement, hockey dedication, commitment and coachability.
All midget female players are eligible to apply.
The applicants must meet the following criteria:
– Is a resident of St. Albert or resides within the St. Albert Minor Hockey Association boundaries.
– Played in the system for at least two years.
– Should be in her last year of midget eligibility.
– Display satisfactory attitude and effort in high school subjects.
– Demonstrate overall ability in hockey, specifically in respect to sportsmanship, team play, attitude and dedication to the game.
The deadline for submissions, including a letter of acceptance from an accredited post-secondary institution, is Feb. 21. The winner will be announced at the Raiders Awards Night in late February or March.
