NET GUARDIAN – Evan Fradette of the St. Albert Sabres faces a shot in Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League action. The Sabres are 2-0-1 after rallying to tie the Sherwood Park Flyers 4-4 on the road Sunday. The next game is Monday versus the KC Squires at 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The St. Albert Merchants raised their record to .500 after depositing two wins last weekend in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

The Merchants doubled the Stony Plain Flyers 4-2 on the road Friday and edged the North Edmonton Red Wings 5-4 Sunday in St. Albert.

Jake Mercier potted a pair and Casey Reid collected three assists against the Flyers (0-3).

Dan Rombough and Tristan Gavin also scored and Ty Cleland stopped 26 shots.

Scoring stats against the Red Wings (1-2), the 2015 Founders Cup and provincial champions and silver medallists at westerns, were unavailable at press time.

The previous weekend the Merchants suffered identical 3-1 losses to the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks (2-0-1) on the road and Beverly Warriors (3-0) in St. Albert.

This weekend the Merchants (2-2) visit the Spruce Grove Regals (1-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena and Sunday they host the Sherwood Park Knights (2-1-1) at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Meanwhile, the Merchants added Krawford Construction as a team sponsor.

The puck drops this weekend for the St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Saturday’s season opener against the Southside Athletic Club starts at 5:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena and Sunday’s home debut against the Canadian Athletic Club begins at 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Last season in the north division the Raiders tied for second at 18-9-7 to finish one point out of first place and in the playoffs lost the best-of-three opening round to the Grande Prairie Storm (14-13-7) after winning the first game.

The Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League lid-lifter for the St. Albert Slash is Friday’s home game against the Edmonton Thunder.

Face-off is 8 p.m. against the seven-time defending league champions at Go Auto Arena.

Saturday the Slash are in Spruce Grove to play the PAC Saints at 4:45 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena.

Last season the Slash finished tied for fifth at 15-12-5 in the 10-team standings and lost the best-of-five opening playoff round in three games to the fourth-place Sherwood Park Fury (17-12-3).

Blake Sydlowski’s second goal of the game in the third period was the tying marker for the St. Albert Sabres in Sunday’s 4-4 draw against the host Sherwood Park Flyers.

The fourth point of the night for Brady Nicholas was his assist on Sydlowski’s score with 10:46 to play.

Nicholas also tallied twice and drew an assist on Sydlowski’s first goal with 5:27 gone in the third.

The Sabres trailed 3-1 after the first and 4-2 entering the third.

The Flyers outshot the Sabres 12-6 in the third and 33-17 overall.

Evan Fradette let in four goals on 31 shots in 52 minutes played and Ryley Osland stopped two shots in eight minutes of action.

Both teams are 2-0-1 in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Monday the Sabres play the Canadian Athletic Club at 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League season starts this weekend for the St. Albert Flyers.

Saturday the midget 15 Flyers play the Spruce Grove PAC Saints at 4:30 p.m. at Glenn Hall Arena and Sunday’s game against the Canadian Athletic Club goes at 6:15 p.m. at Callingwood Arena.

Last season the Flyers placed second in the north division at 27-5-5 and in the North Sutter Cup, a qualification tournament for provincials, finished 0-3 in pool play.

The bantam AAA female St. Albert Raiders skate into league play this weekend with games against north division teams.

Saturday the Raiders face-off against the defending champion Edmonton Lightning at 5:45 p.m. at the Meadows Community Recreation Centre and Sunday’s home game against the Spruce Grove PAC Saints starts at 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

Last season the Raiders finished fifth out of six teams in the north at 10-12-4 and in the best-of-three divisional semifinal lost two straight to the Lightning.
