The St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets renew hostilities Friday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

The rivals clash at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

In the west division the Merchants (13-4) share first place with the North Edmonton Red Wings (12-3-2) and the Jets (11-5-1) are tied for third with the Edmonton Mustangs (11-5-1).

In the opening weekend of the season, the Merchants downed the Jets 9-3 at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

In the sin-bin department, the Jets and Merchants are first and second in penalty minutes in the west with 572 and 567, respectively.

Sunday, the Merchants beat the Mustangs 4-1 in St. Albert for their eighth win in nine games and the Jets pounded the Spruce Grove Regals (4-11-2) 9-0 in Morinville for their second straight win and fourth in six games.

The Merchants led 2-1 after the first frame and connected twice in the third to raise their home record to 7-0.

Casey Reid, Zach Gonek (power play), Brent McGugan and Mitch McNamara (empty net) scored as the 2014 Founders Cup finalists and fourth-place finishers at provincials outshot the Mustangs 44-25. In net was Ethan Maertens-Poole (5-2, 3.42 GAA).

Reid and Tyler Hagel of the Jets are tied for seventh in the CJHL scoring race with 30 points apiece.

Hagel found the back of the net twice against the Regals for a league-high 20 goals in 17 games.

Travis Geislinger chipped in with two goals and two assists, Brett Kampjes added one goal and three assists and Brandon Dubuc had three helpers.

Boe Geslinger, Branden Domoslai, Riley Van Brabant and affiliate Salvidor Derose (power play) also scored as the Jets were credited with 40 shots.

Lawrence Rosychuk (4-3, 4.07 GAA) posted the shutout with 38 saves.

The teams combined for 40 infractions for 146 PIMs. The Regals were assessed 94 PIMs.

Sunday the Merchants host the Stony Plain Flyers (11-6) and the Jets play the Mustangs at Bill Hunter Arena. Game times are 8 p.m.

The Morinville Kings solidified their first-place standing in the North Central Hockey League with their fifth win in a row and second of the season against the Edson Ice on Saturday.

The Kings snapped a 5-5 stalemate after 40 minutes with three consecutive goals en route to the 8-6 victory in Edson.

Shane O’Neill and Dalen Paul tallied twice as the Kings improved to 7-1. The Ice are 3-4 for fourth place in the seven-team senior AA standings.

Jorey Mcrae, Cody Issler, Tim Nolte and Brayden Arcand also lit the lamp and Joshua Lafleche, Riley Miller and Mathew Mcrae posted two assists apiece.

The Ice outshot the Kings 20-7 in the third and 45-35 overall. Chris Sharkey (4-0, 4.22 GAA) was between the pipes for the 2014 Hockey Alberta senior A champions.

In the league scoring race O’Neill ranks first overall with 14 points in eight games.

The Kings are going for the season sweep against the Ice on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre. They doubled the Ice 6-3 Nov. 2 in Edson.

The St. Albert Raiders extended their undefeated streak to seven games last weekend in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Sunday in Lethbridge defenceman Brendan Kallis fired the equalizer with 8:50 to play in the 2-2 draw against the Hurricanes.

Ryan Cox also scored as the Raiders (6-4-7) recorded their third tie in six games.

The Hurricanes (6-5-5) capitalized twice on the power play.

Josh Dechaine (6-2-5, 2.98 GAA) was in net as the Raiders were outshot 31-30.

The day before in Medicine Hat, Riley Smith potted a pair and added one assist in the 6-3 decision against the Southeast Tigers (3-10-3).

Marcus Kitchen and Kaidan McDonald scored their first goals as Raiders and Cam Lockard’s eighth goal of the season to make it 4-1 with 3:12 left in the second was the game winner.

Parker AuCoin picked up to two assists to boost his team-high point total to 23 for a share of fifth place in the league scoring race.

The second-year Raider entered the weekend road trip with eight goals in five games for 16, second most in league play.

Shots were 44-33 for the Raiders and Dechaine was in net.

The Raiders are tied for second in the north standings with the Sherwood Park Kings (6-3-7) and Southside Athletic Club (7-4-5).

The team’s next game is Nov. 28 on the road against the Red Deer Chiefs (4-7-3) at 8 p.m.

The St. Albert Slash picked up one point in two games last weekend to remain in third place in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

The Slash and the second-place Calgary Fire (12-2-4) skated to a 2-2 draw Saturday in St. Albert as Jamie Jones and Megan Lalor scored and Erynn Shantz (6-3-2, 1.04 GAA) stopped 16 shots, compared to 25 saves by Calgary netminder Zoe DeBeauville (5-0-2, 1.29 GAA).

Sunday the Slash lost 3-1 to the Spruce Grove PAC Saints (9-8-2) at Grant Fuhr Arena.

Kennedy Newton opened the scoring in the first period and Shantz faced 19 shots. Sadie Reid (6-3, 1.67 GAA) turned aside 21 shots for the Saints.

This weekend, the Slash plays the last-place Southeast Tigers (2-16-2) of Medicine Hat at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Vauxhall and the Rocky Mountain Raiders (7-6-5) at 2 p.m. Sunday in DeWinton.

The St. Albert Sabres carried a six-game undefeated streak into Tuesday’s contest against the Canadian Athletic Club in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

The score from Bill Hunter Arena was unavailable at press time.

Six points separated the third-place Sabres (8-4-3) and fourth-place Canadians (6-6-1) in the nitro north standings.

The Sabres were coming off their third straight win and fifth in six games as Mitch Reidy (4-2-2, 3.01 GAA) stopped 20 shots in Sunday’s 6-0 shutout of the Maple Leafs (2-12-1) at Mark Messier Arena.

The Sabres were led offensively by Garrett Clegg’s hat-trick, Noah Fayad’s one goal and four assists and Brady Nicholas’ one goal and three assists.

Cole Gupta also scored and Aiden Yakimchuk added two assists as the Sabres registered 44 shots.

Clegg is the team’s top scorer with 14 goals and 21 points in 15 games and Fayad leads all Sabres in assists with 14 in 15 games.
