Junior B results

The third goal of the season by Ryan Deets was the winner for the St. Albert Merchants in Friday's rivalry game with the Morinville Jets.

Deets converted a feed from Bryce Sturm on the power play at 3:38 of the third period for the 3-2 decision in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Deets also assisted on Zach Giacobbo’s power-play marker to open the scoring at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Sturm made it 2-0 early in the second before Ryan Denten of the Jets potted a pair and his second evened the count at two on the power play with 1:15 left in the period.

Shots were 41-28 for the home team and the netminders were Josh Dechaine of the Merchants and Luke Hall of the Jets.

The teams were whistled for only nine infractions apiece for 38 penalty minutes.

Tuesday the Merchants (2-1) played the Knights (1-2) in Sherwood Park and the score was unavailable at press time.

Friday the Merchants host the North Edmonton Red Wings (3-1) at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s road game against the Leduc Riggers (1-3) goes at 8:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Jets remain winless to start the season after Sunday’s 6-3 setback to the Stony Plain Flyers (4-1) in Morinville.

It was 5-0 when Jeff Smith lit the lamp with 34 seconds left in the middle frame.

Connor Tuppala and Zach Mcrae capitalized on the power play in the third as the Jets suffered their fourth loss in a row.

The Jets outshot the Flyers 17-6 in the third and 34-33 overall with Hall between the pipes.

Friday the Jets visit the Spruce Grove Regals (0-3) at 7:45 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena and Sunday’s home tilt with the Beaumont Chiefs (3-1) starts at 7:30 p.m. at Landrex Arena.

Saints victorious

The St. Albert Saints punched their ticket to the 61st annual Quebec International Peewee Tournament by winning the inaugural Edmonton Oilers Peewee Tournament presented by Hockey Edmonton.

The Saints will represent the Oilers Entertainment Group at the Feb. 12 to 23 event at Videotron Centre in Quebec City.

The Saints will also receive Edmonton Oilers’ branded equipment for the tournament and will be given the opportunity to host a fundraising 50/50 draw at an Oilers’ home game.

The qualifier tournament started Sept. 21 and featured 19 peewee AA teams from St. Albert, Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Beaumont, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Strathcona and Sturgeon.

In Sunday's final, the SA501 Saints blanked the SW515 SWZ Oil Kings of the metro bracket 5-0 at Downtown Community Rink after doubling Strathcona 4-2 in the tournament’s regional final.

The Saints also competed at the 2019 Quebec tournament and finished 5-1 as silver medallists. The final was 4-0 for the Pointe-Levy Commandeurs.

Midget 15 Flyers

The St. Albert Flyers picked up points with a pair of ties in the opening weekend of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Scores were 3-3 against the Grande Peace Storm at Go Auto Arena and 4-4 against the PAC Saints at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Liam Fitzgerald notched the equalizer against the Storm with 3:58 to play.

Carter Roy and Liam Cochrane capitalized on the power play and Zakk Makeiff added four assists.

Shots were 48-29 for the Flyers as Teagan Kendrick started the home opener.

Against the Saints, Dylan Stevenson evened the count at four on the power play at 3:41 of the third period.

Fitzgerald, Makeiff and Mason Comeau also scored and Makeiff and Cochrane added a pair of assists.

Damon Cunningham of the Flyers faced 34 shots.

Tuesday’s score against the Maple Leafs was unavailable at press time.

The next midget 15 game is Monday versus CAC United Cycle at 8 p.m. at Callingwood Twin Arenas.

Sabres win

Tyden Redlick tallied twice as the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres rattled the PAC Saints 6-1 in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Ashton Hutchinson, Jaden Beauchamp, Kieran Strauss and Jack Ketsa also scored Sunday at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The shorthanded effort by Strauss made it 4-0 in the middle frame.

Shots were 47-23 for the Sabres as Luke Roberts and Adam Chin shared netminding duties.

The Sabres are 2-1 while the Saints are 0-3.

This weekend the Sabres face-off against the Sherwood Park Flyers (1-1-1) at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at Go Auto Arena and Sunday’s start time against the defending AMBHL provincial champion Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (1-2-1) is 5:15 p.m. at JRC Arena.
