The Morinville Jets skate into tonight’s game as the north division leaders in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Faceoff is 8 p.m. between the Jets (13-4-4) and second-place North Edmonton Red Wings (14-5-1), the defending Founders Cup playoff champions, at Londonderry Arena.
The fourth win in a row and ninth in 10 games was 7-2 against the Stony Plain Flyers (9-9-3) Sunday at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Tyler Hagel’s second goal of the game, a power-play tally, was his 26th of the season and 43rd point.
Jorden Rooke scored with the man advantage and into an empty net.
Joshua Perrott, Brett Dubuc and Dylan Stang potted one apiece and Lee Gadoury added two assists.
Shots were 45-28 for the Jets and Colton Kucher (7-4, 3.12 GAA) was in net.
Friday the Jets visit the Spruce Grove Regals (4-15-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena and Sunday’s game against the Leduc Riggers (5-13-2) starts at 7:15 p.m. in Morinville.
The St. Albert Merchants ended a four-game winless stretch with Sunday’s 4-3 result against the Edmonton Mustangs at Bill Hunter Arena.
Brenden Passek struck twice on the power play and Matt Havens assisted on both goals for the fourth-place Merchants (11-9-1) in the west division of the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Passek’s second of the night made it 4-2 at 17:45 of the middle frame.
Stephen Cretain and Tyler Mork put the Merchants on top 2-1 in the first after the Mustangs (6-16) opened the scoring.
The shot count was 34-30 for the Merchants and Ethan Crotty (4-4, 4.64 GAA) backstopped the team to victory.
The Merchants were coming off a 7-4 setback to the North Edmonton Red Wings (14-5-1) Friday at Akinsdale Arena.
It was 2-0 Merchants on goals by Passek and Mike Bruni before the roof caved in. The Red Wings replied with four in a row in the opening period, including a pair on the power play, and their last three goals were unassisted efforts.
Passek (power play) and Jake Mercier scored in the second and the Red Wings also capitalized on the power play as the Merchants trailed 5-4 entering the third.
Passek finished the game with three points and Dan Spatafora had two assists.
The Merchants were outshot 39-31 by last year’s Founders Cup playoff winners and Ryen Papirny (7-6, 4.22 GAA), a former Red Wings, suffered the loss.
The Merchants have a Friday date in Leduc with the Riggers (5-13-2) and Sunday they host the Beverly Warriors (14-6) at the Akinsdale rink. Game times are 8 p.m.
A season best three-game winning streak lifted the St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders into a second-place tie in the north division of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
The Raiders (7-10-1) are 16 points behind the first-place Sherwood Park Kings (14-1-3), the only north team with a winning record, after Sunday’s 3-2 decision against the KC Pats (5-11-1) at Akinsdale Arena.
Garrett Clegg tallied twice and assisted on the power-play marker by Peter Michailides. Aidan Steinke and Owen Churko picked up two assists apiece.
Chris Curr (6-7, 2.88 GAA) stopped a game-high 34 shots after posting the team’s first shutout of the season the day before with 19 saves in the 6-0 win over the Lloydminster Bobcats (4-12-1) in the Border City.
Clegg and Eddie Gallagher struck twice, Steinke and Logan Hunter notched singles and Maxwell Struss and Zane Avery each had two assists.
Clegg leads the Raiders in scoring with 13 goals and 22 points.
This weekend the Raiders play the Maple Leafs (5-11-1) at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at Bill Hunter Arena and the Foothills Bisons (16-0-2), the top south division team, at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at the Akinsdale rink.
The seventh shutout of the season for the undefeated St. Albert Flyers and the fourth by Evan Fradette was recorded Sunday in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Fradette (7-0, 0.71 GAA) faced 26 shots in the 6-0 victory over the Lloydminster Rage (1-14-1) at Akinsdale Arena.
Erik Boers netted a pair and Blake Sydlowski sniped his 15th goal and added two assists for a league-high 36 points.
Dominik Cesarz, Tyler Pitre and Jaron Coles also scored as the midget 15 Flyers improved to 15-0 (83 GF/13 GA) in the north division.
The Flyers kicked-off a four-game homestand in Saturday’s 6-2 win against the Leduc Oil Kings (9-6).
Cesarz led the attack with two goals and Sydlowski chipped in with four assists.
Kye Buchanan, Cam Aucoin, Justin MacDonald and Kyle Fulton also lit the lamp and Stuart Dovey drew two assists.
Ryley Osland 98-0, 1.00 GAA) stopped 21 shots.
Fradette and Osland are first and second, respectively, in the AMMHL in GAA and save percentage – .973 for Fradette and .960 for Osland.
Osland’s three shutouts are tied for second behind Fradette’s league-best four.
Saturday the Flyers host CRAA Blue (7-3-4), fourth in the south division, at 8 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink.
The next home game for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres is Saturday in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Puck drop is 4:15 p.m. against the Lloydminster Heat (4-11-2) at Akinsdale Arena.
The Sabres were 16-0 (102 GF/29 GA) before hosting the Sherwood Park Flyers (8-8-4) Tuesday. The score was unavailable at press time.
Last weekend the Sabres posted wins of 5-2 against the Red Wings (12-3-4) in Camrose and 3-2 against the Calgary Bisons (10-6-3) in St. Albert.
A natural hat-trick by Matthew Savoie rattled the Red Wings, who led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Carter Savoie and Matthew Reidy capitalized on the power play in the third.
Ethan Edwards assisted on three goals and Zack Ostapchuk had a pair of helpers.
Shots were 21-6 in the third and 37-31 for the Sabres. In net was Kyle Nelson.
The second goal and third point of the game by Carter against the Bisons was tallied with the man advantage at 2:08 in the third.
Ryley Morgan also registered one goal and one assist.
The Sabres outshot the Bisons 38-24 and Nelson (10-0, 2.02 GAA) was between the pipes.
The Morinville Kings cracked the whip in Saturday’s 12-3 lashing of the Slave Lake Winterhawks in the North Central Senior Hockey League.
Cody Issler left his mark with four goals and two assists in the rout at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Ashton Pietersma’s hat-trick, a pair by Kyle Harris and singles from Jorey Mcrae, Cole Cavell and Brady Goebel rounded out the scoring against the Winterhawks (1-10).
Luc VanDale and Thomas Brennan were credited with three assists apiece.
The shot count was 58-31 for the Kings and Ty Swabb (6-2, 3.61 GAA) was in net.
The fourth-place Kings (8-3) travel this weekend for games against the first-place Devon Barons (10-1-1) at 8:15 p.m. Saturday and Eckville Eagles (6-5) at 3 p.m. Sunday.
