A three-game winning streak lifted the Morinville Jets into first place in the west division of the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
The Jets (7-3-4) soared past the North Edmonton Red Wings (8-4-1) and St. Albert Merchants (8-5) after Sunday’s 5-2 triumph against the Stony Plain Flyers (7-5-1) at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Sunday’s league results included losses of 9-4 for the Merchants against the Beaumont Chiefs (11-3) at Akinsdale Arena and 7-4 for the Red Wings, the Founders Cup playoff champions the last two years, against the Spruce Grove Regals (2-9-2).
Game summaries for the Jets and Merchants from Sunday were unavailable at press time.
The Jets were coming off a 6-1 victory over the Beverly Warriors (7-5) Wednesday at Clareview Arena and the Merchants posted their second win in five games, 6-2 over the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks (8-4-1) Friday in St. Albert.
The latest CJHL stats list Tyler Hagel of the Jets as the top scorer with 18 goals and 31 points in 12 games and Matt Havens of the Merchants was tied for third in points with 24 in 12 games.
Jaedon McConnell (3-0) of the Jets was the leading netminder with a 1.11 GAA and Ryen Papirny (6-1) was seventh with a 2.86 GAA.
The Jets were also the most penalized west division team with 400 minutes for fifth overall in the CJHL.
Friday the Merchants host the Regals at 8 p.m. and Sunday they visit the Jets at 6:45 p.m.
Last month the Merchants edged the Jets 7-6 in a shootout in St. Albert.
The Jets are 5-0-1 and the Merchants are 4-3 in their home rinks.
The first victory since Oct. 9 for the St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders was recorded Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.
Garrett Clegg potted a pair on the power play and Owen Churko drew three assists as the Raiders downed the Lloydminster Heat 5-2 in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
Clegg is the top scorer on the Raiders with 12 points and is tied for the team lead in goals with Peter Michailides with six.
Michailides (power play), Eddie Gallagher and Brady Nicholas also scored and Aidan Steinke chipped in with two assists.
The shot count was 35-27 for the Raiders.
Starting netminder Mitchell Reidy (1-2-1, 3.79 GAA) stopped 21 shots before receiving a match penalty during an incident with 7:45 to play against the Heat, who spent more time in the sin-bin than the Raiders in the contest.
Chris Curr (2-4, 3.05 GAA) closed out the win as the Raiders improved to 2-4 on home ice.
The Raiders (3-6-1) are tied for fifth and the Bobcats (1-8-1) shared last place in the north standings.
The Raiders were 0-3-1 in league play before Saturday’s 7-4 loss to the first-place Sherwood Park Kings (9-0-1) in St. Albert.
Jack Langenhahn, Clegg and Michailides collected one goal and one assist apiece and Cole Gupta also scored.
The Raiders were outshot 37-31 and Curr was in net.
Upcoming is the AMHL’s Showcase Weekend in Sherwood Park and the Raiders will face-off against the KC Pats (3-6-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the Calgary Northstars (5-4-1) at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The St. Albert Flyers skate into tonight’s game against the SSAC Bulldogs with an undefeated record in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.
The midget 15 Flyers are 9-0 and the SSAC is 5-1-1 in the north division.
The last victory for the Flyers was 4-1 Sunday against the Leduc Oil Kings (6-3).
Blake Sydlowski paced the attack with two goals in Leduc. His 10 goals and 19 points are team highs and he is also tied for second in the AMMHL points race.
Kye Buchanan and Erik Boers also connected and Tyler Pitre had two assists.
Shots were 39-23 for the Flyers and Evan Fradette (5-0) was between the pipes.
The day before in St. Albert, Ryley Osland backstopped the Flyers to their fifth shutout victory and his league-high third of the season during a 16-save outing in the 5-0 decision against the KC Centennials (4-5).
Osland (0.25 GAA) and Fradette (1.00 GAA) are ranked as the league’s top-two netminders.
Sydlowski, Justin MacDonald, Dominik Cesarz, Matt Offenberger and bantam AAA affiliate Ethan Leyer supplied the offence as the Flyers racked up 56 shots.
This weekend the Flyers play the Maple Leafs (1-8-1) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kenilworth Arena and the PAC Saints (9-2) at 5:15 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena.
The midget elite St. Albert Sharks lost both home games last weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Scores were 6-1 and 4-1 for the Peace Country Storm (3-0-1) at Go Auto Arena.
Emma Sundar and Aidan Soltis scored for the Sharks (2-3).
Shots were 36-13 and 34-8 for the visitors.
Thursday the Sharks play the North Central Impact (0-5) at 7:45 p.m. in Leduc and this weekend they have two games on tap against the Lloydminster Steelers (0-3-1) in the Border City.
The bantam elite St. Albert Raiders and Edmonton Pandas face-off tonight in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Game time is 7 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Raiders are 2-1 and their only loss was 4-3 to the Pandas (2-0-1) in the Oct. 15 season opener.
The last game for the Raiders was Sunday’s 2-1 road win against Calgary Fire Red (0-4-1).
Megan Long and Natalie Kieser scored and Elle Boyko (1-1, 2.50 GAA) faced 18 shots.
The Morinville Kings are winless in two games when they skate twice this weekend in the North Central Senior Hockey League.
The senior AA Kings (3-2) host the Westlock Warriors (0-4) Friday at Ray McDonald Sports Centre and Saturday they visit the Rocky Mountain House Rams (1-1-2). Start times are 8:30 p.m.
The last loss for the Kings was 6-5 to the Whitecourt Wild (2-1) Saturday in Morinville.
The Wild posted period leads of 1-0 and 3-2 and in the third tallied twice after the Kings made it 4-4.
The Kings ended the game with Gerald Desjarlais’ shorthanded effort at the 7:55 mark and a power-play tally by Kyle Harris with 48 seconds to play.
Harris leads the Kings in scoring with five goals and 10 points.
Dalen Paul (power play), Jordan Pelletier and Thomas Brennan also notched singles and Desjarlais and Jamie Johnson added two assists apiece.
Shots were 32-15 for the Kings and Ty Swabb (2-1, 4.66 GAA) was in net.
