Ethan Barwick’s second shutout of the season extended the undefeated St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres’ winning streak to eight games in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Barwick (4-0) stopped 25 shots in Tuesday’s 5-0 decision against the KC Squires (3-5) at Castledowns Arena.
Barwick’s 1.25 GAA is the lowest in the AMBHL.
Two goals by Mike Benning and singles from Tyson Greenway, Carter Savoie and Austin Spiridakis paced the attack as the Sabres registered 52 shots.
Benning is the AMBHL’s top-scoring defenceman with six goals and 15 points for fourth place on the Sabres.
The Nitro north division leaders are in Calgary this weekend for games against the Northstars (4-5-2) and Royals (2-7-2) of the Challenger division.
The deadline to submit applications for the annual John Reid Memorial Scholarship is January 4.
Individuals who played bantam AAA for the Sabres after the 2004/05 season and played hockey in St. Albert for a minimum of three years are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship.
Applicants must be a Canadian citizen and an Alberta resident enrolled in a recognized post-secondary education institution.

The successful applicant will be announced Jan. 19 at 7:15 p.m. during the opening ceremonies of the John Reid tournament at Go Auto Arena.
Previous winners were Justin Kueber, Joshua Maeda, Steven Woolger, Brady McCorriston, Ryan Harrison, Liam Liston, 2015 co-recipients’ Steven Canduro and Brady Reid and last year’s winner, Brad Holmes.
The Reid scholarship was established by the parent group of the 2004/05 Sabres to challenge players to make an impact in the St. Albert community as Reid did as a coach and mentor for St. Albert youths in hockey and lacrosse.
The high-scoring forward with the St. Albert Saints and Sherwood Park Crusaders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the Alberta Golden Bears died of leukemia at age 41 on Nov. 6, 2003.
The next year the St. Albert bantam AAA tournament was renamed in his honour.
Donations to the scholarship fund are also being accepted by the John Reid Memorial Tournament Society.
The St. Albert Blues host the Lakeland Panthers today in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.
Faceoff is 2:30 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.
The Blues are the top Anderson hockey division team at 4-1 and Lakeland is 1-3 in the Rural north division.
The Blues are led by Ryan Deets’ five goals and Zach Carlson’s nine points.
Meanwhile, the St. Albert Crusaders visit the Panthers on Sunday at 1:45 p.m. in Lac La Biche.
The Crusaders are ranked first in the BESA Hockey division at 3-0-1
David Cloutier and Kiegan Miller share the team lead in goals with four and Cloutier is the top point producer with eight.
