The St. Albert Merchants deposited five power-play goals at the expense of the Morinville Jets in Saturday’s 7-3 victory in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
With the Jets shorthanded, Casey Reid tied it at one in the first period, Dan Rombough knotted it at two in the middle frame and in the third Brendan Passek evened the score at three, Mason Kenny lit the lamp with 1:58 to play and Matt Havens potted his team-high 19th goal with 49 seconds remaining.
The Merchants tallied five unanswered goals in the last period while outshooting the Jets 22-11 for an overall total of 49-35.
In net were Ty Clelland (9-7, 3.56 GAA) of the Merchants and Jordan Greenfield (2-2, 5.04 GAA) of the Jets.
Tyler Hagel struck shorthanded and at even strength for the Jets in the opening period and Riley Van Brabant made it 3-2 on the power play in the second.
Michael Wolosyhn and Dane Auchenberg had two assists apiece for the Jets, who unveiled their new jerseys in the game.
Hagel is the top point producer on the Jets with 29 and is second in goals with 14, one behind the team leader, Brandon Dubuc.
Cam Mazur sniped the winner with 10:10 to play and Tyler Mork scored in his Merchants’ debut with 6:20 to go.
Mazur, Kenny and Havens finished with three points apiece and Jake Mercier added two helpers.
Havens ranks seventh in the CJHL scoring race with 39 points in 16 games.
The win was the fourth in five games for the Merchants (11-7-2) and the loss was the fourth in six games for the Jets (8-11).
Tonight at 8 p.m. the Merchants face-off against the Beverly Warriors (12-5-2) at Clareview Arena and the Jets battle the defending Founders Cup and provincial champion North Edmonton Red Wings at Londonderry Arena.
Friday the Merchants host the Edmonton Royals (16-4) at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and the Jets entertain the Warriors at 8:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Jets will be without coach Trent Brown, who was suspended for six games over his actions Saturday. According to the CJHL website, Brown received three games for a gross misconduct penalty, two games for showing disrespect and one game for a game misconduct in the last 10 minutes.
The Jets were assessed 28 penalty minutes on 16 infractions in the loss, compared to 36 minutes and 10 infractions for the Merchants.
The Jets have let in 30 power-play goals this season while averaging 30.78 PIM per game.
The Merchants have surrendered 27 power-play goals and are averaging 25.05 PIM per game.
Tonight the St. Albert Slash host the Sherwood Park Fury in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
Game time is 8:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Fury (6-2-3) and Slash (5-7-4) are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the nine-team league.
The Slash are winners of two shootout decisions in a row while going 2-2-1 in the last five games after edging the Edmonton Thunder 3-2 Saturday in St. Albert.
Danielle Cox and Brooke Tipton tied it at two in the third period and Cox scored the shootout winner.
Cox is the team leader in points with eight and her five goals in 14 games ranks second behind Kyrelle Skoye’s six goals in 16 games
Shots were 33-26 for the Thunder (3-8-3), the seven-time reigning AMMFHL champions. In net was Natalie Bender (2-4-2, 2.25 GAA).
Sunday the Slash and Lloydminster Steelers (4-9-2) hook up at 1:30 p.m. in St. Albert.
Chris Sharkey stopped 43 shots Saturday as the Morinville Kings battled back from a first-period deficit to win their third straight game in the North Central Senior AA Hockey League.
Sharkey (4-1, 2.61 GAA) backstopped the Kings to the 5-3 victory after the home team fell behind 3-1 to the Devon Barons at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Chris Wilson made it 1-1 in the first, Brandon Domoslai (power play) and Ashton Pietersma connected in the second and Brayden Arcand scored shorthand in the opening minute of the third and filled an empty net with seconds to play.
Jamie Johnson, Riley Miller and Wayne Gatza chipped in with two assists apiece as the Kings improved to 2-2-1 at home.
The Kings (4-2-1) are three points back of first place in the north division and the Barons (6-2) are the top team in the south standings.
The Kings have road games on tap Friday against the Daysland Northstars (3-2) at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday against the Whitecourt Wild (1-6) at 8 p.m. in Mayerthorpe.
The Kings are led by Dalen Paul’s eight goals and 11 points in seven games and Gerald Desjarlais’ eight assists and 10 points in six games.
The St. Albert Flyers are in the midst of a six-game homestand in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Tuesday’s score against the Spruce Grove PAC Saints (7-2-1) was unavailable at press time.
The second-last game during the Flyers’ stretch at Akinsdale Arena is next Wednesday versus the Sherwood Park Squires (10-1-1) at 7:45 p.m.
The Flyers were 5-3 at home and 8-4-2 in league play after Saturday’s 5-2 decision against the Grande Peace Storm (2-9-1).
Cole Gupta’s hat-trick and Zach Carlson’s two-goal effort paced the attack. Cole Sadownyk and David Cloutier also registered two assists apiece.
The Flyers outshot the visitors 42-13 and Colton Girard (5-2-1, 1.50 GAA) recorded the win in net.
Gupta leads the Flyers in scoring with 13 goals and 20 points. Last week he contributed one goal and one assist in the 4-3 win over CAC United Cycle (8-7).
Cloutier potted a pair and Mason Rezewski drew four assists. Eddie Gallagher also scored and Mitchell Reidy (3-2-1, 2.34 GAA) faced 16 shots.
