Heading into the weekend the first-place Jets (15-4-2) were eight points ahead of the fourth-place Merchants (11-8-2) in the west division.

Friday night the Merchants hosted the fifth-place Edmonton Mustangs (9-10-2), but the score was unavailable at press time.

The St. Albert Flyers can move into first place in the north conference of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League with a pair of victories this weekend.

The second-place Flyers (10-2-3) host the Sherwood Park Squires (3-8-6) today at 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Sunday the Flyers visit the first-place Lloydminster Rage (13-2) at 11:30 a.m.

The Flyers are 6-0-1 in their last seven games after Tuesday’s 6-3 road win against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (4-9-2). Brett Smythe scored twice and added three assists. Paul Lovsin tallied twice and singles were netted by Matt Havens and Steven Canduro. Patrick Gora stopped 20 shots.

Lovsin is the top scorer in the conference with 28 points in 14 games. Gora (5-1-2, 2.15 GAA) leads all netminders in shutouts with three.

The St. Albert Slash have two games on tap this weekend in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

Today the Slash (10-5-3) is in Sherwood Park to play the Fury (4-14-2) at 1:45 p.m.

Sunday’s home game against the Spruce Grove Saints (5-10-2) starts at 2 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.

The Slash is coming off a 3-3 draw against the Grande Prairie Storm (3-12-3) last weekend in St. Albert. The Slash record in November was 3-2-2.

Next weekend the Slash will compete at the Notre Dame Hounds tournament. They have games scheduled against the Westman (Man.) Wildcats, Okanagan Hockey Academy and Weyburn Goldwings.

The St. Albert Raiders skate Sunday against the Calgary Rangers in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League. Puck drop is 11 a.m. at Performance Arena.

The Raiders (11-2-3) are the top team in the north and the Rangers (7-6-2) are second in the south.

Last weekend the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Calgary. Megan Lalor scored her 15th goal of the season for the Raiders. She is the co-leader in the league’s points race with 23 in 16 games. Kennedy Bozak ranks third with 22 points in 16 games.

The tie ended the Raiders’ seven-game winning streak.
