Merchants results

The St. Albert Merchants can claim their second win in a row with a victory Friday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Faceoff is at 8 p.m. against the Strathcona Bruins (0-4) at Akinsdale Arena.

The Merchants (2-2) are winless in two home games after dropping a 6-3 decision to the Morinville Jets (1-3) on Friday.

The Merchants gassed a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Bryce Strum and Peter Corrigan (power play) as the Jets scored five in a row before Sam Milner (power play) replied at 8:11 of the third.

Shots were 43-42 for the Jets as Brandon Boughen (four GA on 20 shots in 35 minutes) and Colton Iwaschuk (two GA on 23 shots in 25 minutes) split time in net for the Merchants.

Sunday the Merchants bounced back to thump the Spruce Grove Regals 8-1 at Grant Fuhr Arena.

Cole Gupta, Marco Runco and Peter Corrigan potted two goals apiece as the Merchants posted period leads of 2-0 and 4-1.

The Merchants also scored four times on the power play with Gupta, Corrigan, Strum and Adrian Parth finding the back of the net.

Shots were 20-5 in the first and 62-22 overall for the Merchants.

Iwaschuk recorded the win in his first start of the season.

Sunday the Merchants visit the Wetaskiwin Icemen (2-1), winners of back-to-back playoff championships. Puck drop is 6 p.m.

Jets results

The Morinville Jets skate into the weekend with one win in four games, including two losses at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

Game times are 8:30 p.m. Friday against the host Sherwood Park Knights (3-1) and 7:30 p.m. Sunday against the Beaumont Chiefs (4-0) in Morinville.

The Jets are coming off Sunday’s 3-1 setback to the visiting Stony Plain Flyers (3-1).

Lee Gadoury’s goal in the first minute of the third period cut the lead in half.

Shots were 41-40 for the Jets, and Colton Kucher (0-2, 2.50 GAA) was in net.

The first win of the season for the Jets was Saturday’s 6-3 decision against the Merchants (2-2) at Akinsdale Arena.

Brett Dubuc, a 2018 first-team all-star forward, lit the lamp four times, including three during a five-in-a-row scoring spree by the Jets.

Dubuc’s second goal was a shorthanded effort to knot it at two at 2:29 of the middle frame.

Zach Mcrae (power play) and Gadoury also scored, Josh Mcrae added three assists and captain Connor Tupala, who played the last two seasons for the Merchants, picked up two helpers.

Luke Hall (1-1, 3.50 GAA) faced 42 shots, including 19 in the opening period as the Merchants struck twice before Zach Mcrae answered for the Jets.

Raiders win two

The St. Albert Nektar Data Systems Raiders posted identical wins with third-period comebacks in both home games to start off the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League regular season.

The 3-2 results were against the Leduc Oil Kings (1-1) Saturday and Grande Prairie Storm (0-1-1) Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.

Captain Erik Boers sniped the winner against Leduc on the power play with 3:15 to play after Eric Perneel tallied the equalizer at 6:39 of the third.

Tyson Greenway also scored while Cody Copes-Nielsen and Robert Kincaid collected two assists apiece.

Shots were 27 apiece as Andreai Proctor-Ramirez, who played for the midget AAA Lloydminster Bobcats last season, drew the start for the Raiders.

Tanner Sklaruk’s goal with 2:02 remaining broke a 2-2 tie with the Storm.

Brad Adam’s shorthanded effort pulled the Raiders even at two at the nine-minute mark of the period.

Boers opened the scoring early in the contest.

The Raiders out-shot the Storm 33-23. In net was Ethan Barwick, a call-up earlier in the week for the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

The Raiders head south this weekend for games against the AMHL champion Lethbridge Hurricanes (1-1) on Saturday and Airdrie Bisons (2-0) on Sunday.

Flyers at home

Tonight’s home-opener for the St. Albert Flyers in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League starts at 7:45 p.m. against the Canadian Athletic Club at Akinsdale Arena.

The midget 15 Flyers returned home from Grande Prairie last weekend with two victories against the Storm by scores of 5-3 and 6-5.

Dylan Leslie, Jordan Burgardt, Jordan Irwin, Ethan Sundar and Shea Spofford scored in the first game.

Shots were 48-21, and Carson Ironside was in net.

David Saunders pumped in a pair in the second game, and Kaleb West, Chase Visser, Sundar and Burgardt notched singles as the Raiders registered 44 shots.

Ethan Kadatz was tested 27 times by the Storm.

Sabres winless

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres will have to wait until next week to record their first win of the season in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

The Sabres are 0-2-1 after Monday’s 4-3 loss to the KC Squires at Clareview Arena.

The teams face off next Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Squires (3-0) capitalized twice on the power play and the team’s only goal in the third period made it 4-2 with 8:33 remaining.

Connor Dale, Liam Cochrane and Carmelo Crandell scored for the Sabres.

Shots were 31 apiece, and Teagan Kendrick was between the pipes.
