The No. 1-ranked 4A high school women’s basketball team in the province is back on the hardwood today after the exam break in the metro Edmonton division one league.

Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. between the St. Albert Skyhawks (5-0) and Leduc Tigers (3-3) at the SkyDome.

The Skyhawks, last year’s division one champions and 4A provincial bronze medallists, are 14-5 overall.

The fifth tournament of the season is the St. Mary’s Saints Senior Classic this weekend in Calgary.

The Skyhawks play the La Crete Lancers in the round of eight and the next game is against the No. 7-ranked Raymond Comets or William Aberhart Orange of Calgary.

The No. 8-ranked Paul Kane Blues are on the opposite side of the draw and the team’s tournament opener is against the Cardston Cougars before facing St. Mary’s or Foothills Falcons of Okotoks.

William Aberhart, Cardston and St. Mary’s are 4A honourable mentions and La Crete is No. 1 in 2A in the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association’s first ranking period.

Paul Kane, the 2018 division one semifinalist and 4A provincial consolation champion, is 4-1 in league play and 9-5 overall.

The Skyhawks are hosting a tournament Feb. 15-16.

Wolves basketball

The Lady Wolves Invitational tips off Friday morning at Morinville Community High School.

The tournament lid-lifter is 10 a.m. between the Wolves and John Maland Wildcats of Devon.

The next game for the Wolves is against the Edwin Parr Predators or Beaumont Bandits at 5 p.m. Friday in the consolation bracket or Saturday’s 9 a.m. semifinal.

The St. Peter the Apostle Spartans of Spruce Grove, R.F. Staples Thunderbirds of Westlock, Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles of Sherwood Park and Peace Wapiti Academy Titans of Grande Prairie also are competing.

Saturday the consolation final is 2:15 p.m., the third-place game is 4 p.m., and the final is 5:45 p.m.

The 3A provincial rankings list the Spartans at No. 2 and the Wolves at No. 5.

The Wolves, last year’s North Central zone champions and sixth-place finishers at 3A provincials, are 12-3 overall.

Meanwhile, the Morinville men are competing at the Archbishop MacDonald tournament this weekend and the Eastglen Blue Devils Classic Feb. 7 to 8 before the team’s annual tournament Feb. 15-16.

The 2018 North Central champions and 10th-place team at 3A provincials are 9-3 overall as an honourable mention in the 3A rankings.
