A.J. Armstrong of St. Albert and Tyler Saunders of Sturgeon County finished near the top of the leader board at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship last week at Legends on the Niagara's Battlefield Course.
Armstrong tied for fourth with a 9-under-par 279 (67, 69, 73, 70) and Saunders – the provincial junior and amateur champion – tied for sixth with a 6-under 282 (69, 72, 72, 69).
They were among five Albertans in the company of the top eight finishers at junior nationals.
The 72-hole competition featured multiple course records, low scores and weather delays.
The winner was Austin James of Bath, Ont. with a 15-under 273. His 8-under 64 on the second round matched the course record and the next day it was broken by the runner-up, Tony Gill of Vaughan, Ont., with a 9-under 63. Gill finished four shots behind James at 11-under 277.
In the team event Saunders, a member of the Glendale Golf & Country Club, Jack Wood of Banff and Andrew Harrison of Camrose posted a four-shot victory for Alberta in the 36-hole competition at junior nationals.
Saunders and Armstrong, a member of the Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club, also qualified for the 110th annual Canadian Men's Amateur Championship at the Elmhurst and Southwood courses in Winnipeg that wrapped up before press time.
In the Willingdon Cup team format at the Canadian amateur the Alberta trio of Armstrong, who finished tied for third at the Alberta amateur and was fifth at the provincial juniors, Saunders and Wood placed second at 1-under 283. Ontario captured the two-day event with a 9-under 275.
Club champions
Sandra Fisher and Mark Rosychuk were the big winners at the Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club championships.
Fisher celebrated her 21st ladies' title Sunday and Rosychuk was crowned the men's champion Monday for the first time since 2008.
Fisher carded a 36-hole total of 163 (85, 78) as the low gross winner.
The low net winner was Christie Green at 133.
The two-day tournament featured 18 ladies.
Rosychuk was the men's top low gross golfer with a 54-hole total of 218 (70, 76, 72).
Bob Dann was the low net winner at 191.
Eighty men were flighted by handicap into six flights for the three-day tournament.
Junior Ryder Cup
The Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club hosts its third annual Junior Ryder Cup this weekend.
The U18 tournament consists of 20 golfers, including seven females.
The skills competition was staged Friday and the tournament runs today and Sunday with a 2 p.m. start time both days.
Sturgeon Valley's PGA of Canada staff has worked throughout the season with the juniors in developing their games.
