Skyhawks in Miles
The first of five metro Edmonton games at Larry Olexiuk Field for the St. Albert High Skyhawks is Thursday’s lid-lifter in the division two Miles conference.Kickoff is 5 p.m. against the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs.
The Skyhawks huddled up in last week’s exhibition at Canmore against the Bow Valley Bobcats and won 34-6.
Jackson Ganton scored two touchdowns and Mason Mildenberger, Matt Swecera and Logan Lysohirka also crossed the goal line for majors.
Jared Granoski displayed strong play at linebacker and on the offensive line and Evan Selzler, a transfer student from the Archbishop Jordan Scots, was a leader at linebacker and tight-end.
Last year’s Skyhawks finished 6-4 as the Tier III (450 to 749 students) provincial north finalists and two losses were against the Paul Kane Blues by scores of 43-30 in league play and 16-3 in the Miles semifinal.
The rivalry game with Paul Kane is Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. in St. Albert.
Paul Kane in Miles
The Paul Kane Blues kick off the metro Edmonton regular season Thursday against the McNally Tigers.Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills.
Last week’s scrimmage against the host Cochrane Cobras consisted of four ball possessions per team for 10-minute intervals as the 2017 Alberta Bowl Tier III (450 to 749 students) champions scored seven times to Paul Kane’s three.
Hunter Bo-Lassen and Luke Eady turned in strong outings on defence, while Jacob King and Konor Campbell had positive outings offensively.
Eady’s six-yard catch, Marty Raw’s two-yard plunge and Kings’ 44-yard quarterback scamper resulted in touchdowns.
Paul Kane is coming off a 7-3 season as the division two Miles Conference finalist and Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) provincial north semifinalist.
Bellerose in Carr
The Bellerose Bulldogs host the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds in the division one Carr conference opener Friday.Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
The last exhibition game for Bellerose was Friday's 14-13 win against the Notre Dame Cougars of Red Deer in St. Albert.
Bellerose led by 14 at halftime as Adam Rafat reeled in two touchdown passes from Jared Koziol.
Last year’s record for Bellerose was 7-4 as the Carr finalist in the metro Edmonton league and Tier I (1,250-plus students) provincial north finalist.
Sturgeon in Gilfillan
Tonight’s division three Gilfillan conference exhibition between the first-year Sturgeon Spirits and Eastglen Blue Devils kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills.The metro Edmonton regular season starts Sept. 13 for Sturgeon against the Ardrossan Bisons at 7:30 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
Sturgeon is also hosting a jamboree Saturday in St. Albert and the visiting teams are the Whitecourt Cats, Father Mercredi Trappers of Fort McMurray and Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie.
The field will be split in half for the 40-minute controlled scrimmages at 2:20, 3:10 and 4 p.m.
Last weekend’s exhibition against the West Central Rebels in St. Albert was cancelled because of low numbers for the Rocky Mountain House team.
