Having fun is the name of the game for Michael Maguire.
The Special Olympics St. Albert athlete of the month is an active participant in floor hockey, basketball, swimming, soccer and baseball throughout the year.
“I like do stuff when I’m with my buddies and have fun,” Maguire said. “It keeps me active and keeps me in good shape.”
The floor hockey netminder backstopped the St. Albert Wolves to the gold medal in the Hull division at the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games in February in Grande Prairie.
“I like to stop the puck and keep the puck out of the net,” said the fan of goaltenders’ Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo.
Maguire, 21, was nominated by the Special Olympics St. Albert floor hockey coaches and players for athlete of the month honours.
A positive attitude, skill development over the year, performance at provincials and “an overall great athlete on the team” highlighted his selection.
“I feel proud,” Maguire said.
