The second Carr division one win in a row for the Bellerose Bulldogs in metro Edmonton football was Friday’s 24-22 result against the Jasper Place Rebels at Johnny Bright Park.
Early in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs leading 17-14, Colton Meronyk ran nine yards into the endzone on an option play and Jaedon Carroll’s third conversion of the game put the Bulldogs up by 10.
Meronyk finished the game with 36 yards on nine carries while filling in for starting running back Zach Nuttall.
Grade 12 quarterback Morgan Sherban spearheaded the attack by completing 13 of 20 passes for 136 yards and threw touchdown strikes to Corbin Stewart for 10 yards to open the scoring and 13 yards to Darryl Broderick in the third quarter. Sherban also gained 97 yards on 13 carries.
Carroll was the team’s top rusher with 101 yards on seven carries and caught four passes for 46 yards. He also booted an 18-yard field goal to make it 10-0 in the first quarter.
Eric Calkins was on the receiving end of four passes for 42 yards and Stewart had three catches for 26 yards.
Logan Moreau was credited with eight tackles, followed by Drew Morison with six and five apiece for Matt Heinrichs, Elliot Saive and Ryan Young. Heinrichs and Terrell Peters also recorded one quarterback sack apiece.
The Bulldogs trailed 14-10 at halftime after leading 10-8 to start the second quarter
The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 after the win and the Rebels are 1-2.
Thursday the Bulldogs travel to Sherwood Park to play the Salisbury Sabres (1-0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5.
The Sabres are sixth and the Bulldogs are seventh in the Football Alberta Tier I (1,250-plus students) rankings.
The Battle of St. Albert between the Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues is Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
Thursday the Paul Kane Blues host the winless Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds in metro Edmonton football.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park and admission is $5.
The Blues are 1-1 in the Carr division one standings after a wild 50-40 loss to the Bev Facey Falcons (3-0) Friday at Johnny Bright Park.
Grade 11 Facey standout Chuba Hubbard, the fastest 100-metre sprinter in North America and the fourth fastest at the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships in Columbia, shredded the Blues for six touchdowns for 12 overall in three games.
It was 43-40 Facey in the last minute of the marathon affair and the Blues were marching the ball but a pick-six with about 15 seconds to play left the Paul Kane squad reeling.
Facey, last year’s Carr champions as winners of six of the last eight division one finals, led 14-8 after the first quarter but the Blues jumped ahead 24-23 before the break. The first half featured a lengthy delay as an injured Paul Kane player was whisked away by ambulance.
After three quarters it was 36-32 Facey.
Grade 12 quarterback Brendan Guy racked up 457 yards while going 24-for-39 passing for four TDs.
Tanner Buchanan was on the receiving end of TD throws of 45 and 63 yards while amassing 217 yards on seven receptions.
Matt Schaaf and Aidan Mueller caught TD passes of 50 and three yards, respectively.
Schaaf finished with 63 receiving yards on two catches, Mueller had 59 yards on seven grabs and Keaton Zaychkowsky collected 66 yards on seven receptions.
The ground game generated 60 yards on 12 carries while finding the endzone.
Total yardage was 517 for the Miles division two champions the last two years.
It was the first metro Edmonton league loss for the Blues since 2012 and ironically it was against Facey, 36-14 in the team’s last game of the season to finish 3-5 in the Carr.
In the Football Alberta rankings, Facey is No. 3 in Tier I and the Blues are No. 2 in Tier II (750 to 1,249 students).
The St. Albert High Skyhawks huddle up Thursday against the Ardrossan Bisons in metro Edmonton football.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Clarke Park and admission is $5.
The Skyhawks are 0-2 and Ardrossan is 1-1 in the Miles division two standings.
Last week the Skyhawks lost 25-0 to the St. Francis Xavier Rams (1-1), the 2014 Gilfillan division three finalists, and Ardrossan dropped a 35-12 decision to the McNally Tigers (2-0), last year’s division two finalists.
The Football Alberta rankings list the Skyhawks eighth as the only metro team in the Tier III (school population 450 to 749) top 10 and Ardrossan is sixth in Tier IV (449 or less students).
