The first-place Bellerose Bulldogs can clinch a semifinal playoff berth in Carr division one football with a victory Thursday against the Harry Ainlay Titans.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Foote Field and admission is $5.
The Bulldogs are 5-0 and the Titans are tied for third at 3-2.
In the weekly Football Alberta Tier I (1,250-plus students) rankings the Bulldogs are third and the Titans are ninth.
The Bev Facey Falcons (4-1) and Salisbury Sabres (3-2) are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively.
The last game for the Bulldogs before the playoffs is next Thursday against Facey at 6 p.m. in Sherwood Park.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 41-35 decision against the Spruce Grove Panthers (0-4-1) at Fuhr Sports Park. The Dawgs almost blew it late in the game after building leads of 10-7 at halftime, 31-13 after three quarters and 41-21 with under five minutes to play.
Tyler Feltis remains the frontrunner for the division rushing title with 806 yards on 76 carries after racking up 201 yards on 15 handoffs against the Panthers. The Grade 12 tailback also raised his touchdown total to nine after scoring twice in Spruce Grove.
Seth Waselenchuk ranks among the top receivers in the division with 346 yards on 22 catches after grabbing six passes for 159 yards in the win.
Quarterback Morgan Sherban is 46-for-71 passing for 640 yards and five TDs after completing nine out of 17 attempts for 224 yards for two TDs and one interception last week.
The leading tackler this season is Nick Cowan with 38, followed by Josh Coogan’s 24, Mike Woywitka’s 16 and Trace Stuht and Waselenchuk with 14 apiece.
Cowan registered seven tackles and Coogan had six against the Panthers. Cowan is also 5-for-8 kicking field goals.
The St. Albert High Skyhawks host the Ardrossan Bisons in Miles division two football Thursday at Riel Recreation Park.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. and admission is $5.
The Skyhawks are 2-2 and Ardrossan is 2-3.
The Football Alberta rankings have the Skyhawks listed fifth in Tier III (450 to 749 students) and Ardrossan is sixth in Tier IV (449 or less students).
The Skyhawks will represent the metro Edmonton league in the Tier III provincial playoffs as the only Tier III team in the Miles and will play the Mighty Peace rep in the Nov. 8 north semifinal at Clarke Park.
Ardrossan is now a Tier IV school because of a dip in enrolment after reaching the Tier III Alberta Bowl final last year.
The last game for the Skyhawks was Friday’s 28-14 loss to the McNally Tigers (2-2) at Foote Field.
The latest Skyhawks’ stats show Rory O’Donovan with 289 yards on 30 carries, Brandon Jillings has 238 yards on 27 handoffs and Logan Tait-Vanderheide added 215 yards on 15 carries.
Sam Cuciz is 18-for-27 passing for 208 yards and five touchdowns and one interception. On defence O’Donovan is credited with 20 tackles and two sacks and John Brouse has 12 tackles.
The Paul Kane Blues have the week off after nailing down first place in the Miles division two standing for the second year in a row.
The last game before the playoffs kick off Oct. 24 is next Thursday against the W.P. Wagner Warriors (1-3) at 5 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park. Admission is $5.
The Blues are 5-0 after going 10-1 overall last year as the Miles champions and Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) north finalists after defeating the Ardrossan Bisons 35-7 last week at Riel Recreation Park.
The No. 2-ranked Tier II team in the Football Alberta top-10 poll led 14-0 at halftime. Ardrossan’s only TD was off a blocked punt for a 35-yard return in the third quarter.
The Blues spread the offence around as quarterback Brendan Guy was 14-for-27 passing for 221 yards and four players combined for 249 rushing yards on 42 carries.
Guy fired TD strikes to Tanner Buchanan (67 yards) and Aidan Mueller (six yards). Mueller led all receivers with six receptions for 54 yards.
Guy also gained 80 yards on six carries.
Kieran Porter crossed the goal line with a pair of one-yard runs while racking up 121 yards on 24 handoffs. Brandon Smith also scored from the one.
Two-way standouts Shaydon Phillip (18 catches for 230 yards, plus seven TDs) and Ty Beck (233 yards on 20 carries, plus five TDs) didn’t play because of injuries.
