Week two in the Capital District Minor Football Association features the following match-ups for St. Albert Minor Football Association teams in the atom, peewee and bantam divisions.
Today’s schedule
• Atom Buccaneers versus Edmonton Seahawks, 10 a.m. at Strathcona Athletic Park.
Last weekend the Buccaneers and Spruce Grove Cougars battled to a scoreless draw at Riel Recreation Park.
• Peewee Riders versus Sherwood Park SabreCats, 3 p.m. at Strathcona Athletic Park.
The Riders are coming off a 6-0 win over the St. Albert Colts last weekend at the Riel turf field.
• Bantam 49ers versus Sherwood Park Wolverines, 12:30 p.m. at Strathcona Athletic Park.
The 49ers shut out the St. Albert Fury 21-0 last weekend at the Riel turf field.
Sunday’s schedule
• Atom Vikings vs. Edmonton Chargers, 10 a.m. at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove.
Last weekend the Vikings blanked the Leduc Bobcats 8-0 in Leduc.
• Peewee Colts versus Wetaskiwin Wildcats, 3 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.
• Bantam Fury versus Edmonton Mustangs, 12:30 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.
The Bellerose Bulldogs kicked off the metro Edmonton junior football schedule with a bang in Tuesday’s defensive struggle in Sherwood Park.
Andrew Johnson rushed for one touchdown and was credited with 4.5 quarterback sacks from his defensive end position in the 15-2 win over the Salisbury Sabres.
“The defence played very well, racking up six sacks and stops in the offensive backfield,” said head coach Chad Hill.
The Bulldogs scored on their opening possession. Long runs by Seth Waselenchuk and Johnson set up fullback Brennan Gorman’s two yard major.
Early in the second quarter the defence, led by linebacker Nick Cowan, stopped the Sabres in their tracks with a goal line stand. After the turnover on downs at the one-yard line, the Bulldogs gave up a safety.
The score was 6-2 until early in the fourth quarter, when Johnson busted loose for a 45-yard TD. Waselenchuk ran in the two-point conversion.
Cowan closed out the scoring with a 55-yard punt single in the fourth quarter.
The next game for the Bulldogs is Tuesday against the Paul Kane Blues (1-0), the defending premier conference champions. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
The Paul Kane Blues survived a shaky start and some untimely miscues to defeat the Bev Facey Falcons 20-17 in Tuesday’s metro Edmonton junior football season opener in Sherwood Park.
The Falcons opened the scoring after stripping the Blues of the opening kickoff and recovering it at Paul Kane’s 10-yard line. Two plays later they hit paydirt.
Two series later, Blues’ quarterback Shaydon Philip was picked off at his own 20. The Falcons settled for a 17-yard field to lead 10-0 just as the second quarter started.
The Blues rebounded by controlling the ball on offence, resulting in a Kieran Porter eight-yard touchdown run with 2:40 left until halftime.
The Falcons roared back in the third quarter with a long drive to extend the lead to 17-7.
Three plays later, Philip hooked up with John Pharis for a 105-yard catch and run with 45 seconds remaining until quarter time.
Both teams exchanged punts in the fourth quarter, when Porter scored his second TD of the game on a 16-yard run with 7:34 to play to give the Blues their first lead of the game at 20-17. The convert was no good.
The defence then stopped the Falcons in their tracks to seal the deal.
Last year in the premier conference final the Blues downed the Falcons 18-10. The Blues finished 7-1 overall in the first season of football at Paul Kane
Tuesday the Blues huddle up against the Bellerose Bulldogs (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
