The division one Carr conference lid-lifter kicks off at 6 p.m. against the Spruce Grove Panthers at Larry Olexiuk Field.
Last year the Bellerose senior team rallied to defeat the Panthers 32-21 in the Tier I (1,250-plus students) qualifier for the provincial north playdowns.
The Bulldogs finished tied for fifth place in the Carr while going 5-5 overall as the north semifinalists.
The Football Alberta rankings for week one of the season list the Bulldogs eighth in Tier I as the third of four Carr teams in the top 10.
Blues blank Bisons
The Paul Kane Blues started off the metro Edmonton season on the right foot in Thursday’s exhibition against the Ardrossan Bisons.
The Blues posted a 36-0 decision in Sherwood Park against a pool A opponent in the division two Miles conference.
The Blues had practised only five times before the contest and everybody saw action.
Alex Gamble was all over the field for the Blues while recording seven tackles and three sacks and on the other side of the ball caught four passes for 113 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown reception, and rushed for an eight-yard major while surpassing 50 yards on the ground.
Ethan Brandsma was credited with six tackles and one sack as the Blues held the young and rebuilding Bisons, last year’s Miles’ finalists and Tier IV (449 or less students) provincial north semifinalists, to 87 yards of total offence.
The Blues rolled up 440 yards total offence as Connor Guy and Ethan Wedman split quarterbacking duties. Guy completed eight of 11 passes for 284 yards and two TDs and Wedman was 7-for-14 for 82 yards and one TD.
Wedman was also on the receiving end of a 95-yard TD strike and ran for a three-yard major. He finished with 131 yards on two catches.
Jake Strakowitz also found the endzone with a 15-yard reception and it was one of his three catches for 55 yards in game.
The league opener for the Blues is Sept. 14 against the O’Leary Spartans at 5:25 p.m. at Clarke Stadium.
The Blues are coming off a 1-7-1 season as the seventh-place finishers in the division one Carr Conference and Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) provincial north semifinalists.
Junior Bulldogs
The last exhibition scrimmage for the junior Bellerose Bulldogs before the regular season kicks off was Saturday’s 16-6 loss to the Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie at Larry Olexiuk Field.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on Zach Froese’s quarterback run from 10 yards out and the two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
The Mavericks, a senior team in the Mighty Peace League, replied with a touchdown and two-point conversion late in the first half and scored again in the third quarter.
There were no special teams in the game and punting was moved 30 yards.
The only St. Albert junior team in high school football huddles up in the eight-team metro Edmonton league Sept. 19 against the O’Leary Spartans at 6 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
Last year the Bulldogs finished 5-1 as division one semifinalists and the 27-11 loss to the Jasper Place Rebels, the eventual champions, ended a run of 34 consecutive wins in league and playoffs and four consecutive playoff cups.
Skyhawks football
The St. Albert High Skyhawks tackle the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs in Friday's exhibition at 5 p.m. at Lazerte high school.
In the metro Edmonton league, the Skyhawks are in pool A of the division two Miles conference and Lazerte is a pool A team in the Gilfillan conference.
The first league game for the Skyhawks is Sept. 14 against the host Ardrossan Bisons at 5 p.m.
The Skyhawks finished 4-6 overall last year as the Miles’ semifinalists and Tier III (450 to 749 students) provincial north finalists.
The Skyhawks are listed eighth in the Football Alberta season-opening Tier III rankings.
SAMFA games
Three of the four St. Albert Minor Football Association teams make their regular season debuts Sunday.
The peewee senior varsity Riders and bantam senior varsity 49ers huddle up at the Leduc Composite High School against the peewee Wildcats at 10 a.m. and bantam Ticats at 12:30 p.m.
The bantam junior varsity Fury also tackles the Sherwood Park Wolverines at 12:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills Park.
The peewee junior varsity Colts have the bye.
All four St. Albert teams have games on tap next Saturday at Larry Olexiuk Field as SAMFA celebrates its 55th anniversary.
