Approximately 200 athletes from across Western Canada are expected to compete in Fight of the Fittest from June 25 to 26 at Servus Place, where they will they battle it out to determine who is the fittest.
“It’s been a long-time dream and goal to bring the fitness community in Edmonton together in a large scale fitness competition and I just felt I had the means and the ability to do that,” says co-owner of Saint City CrossFit Brian Carter. The company is host of the event.
Event co-ordinator Morgan Chaulk says they are hoping the competition will be good exposure for the gym and everything that it offers.
“The gym isn’t strictly a CrossFit facility,” Chaulk says. “Brian does online programming for clients worldwide, things that individuals can do in their homes even.”
She says they also want to bring more people and business into St. Albert.
Carter says he was drawn to the sport of fitness because of the camaraderie and the community that comes with it. He says he enjoys working out in groups and the high intensity of CrossFit.
“As a former competitive hockey player, I was looking for something else after hockey and football and everything was over that I could compete in,” Carter says.
Neither CrossFit nor the Fight of the Fittest is intended for elite athletes only. Carter wants to rid the sport of the stigma that only select people can do CrossFit.
“It’s all-inclusive. We have people competing from 18 years old into their 40s and 50s and actually, almost 60s, so everyone can do these kind of competitions.”
Carter is already looking toward the future of Fight of the Fittest.
“We’re very excited for next weekend, definitely want to turn it into an annual competition,” he says. “We’re happy with the turnout for our first year and obviously we want to build on that every single year.”
Vendors from across Canada will be at the competition to offer clothing, food and physical care, such as chiropractic treatments, massage, and physiotherapy.
Chaulk encourages spectators to attend the competition.
“There are lots of people coming and lots of cool things to see.”
The event is free for all spectators. For more information visit www.fightofthefittest.com.
