Raiders surging The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders raised their record to .500 in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League with a pair of victories on home ice last weekend.

Raiders surging

The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders raised their record to .500 in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League with a pair of victories on home ice last weekend. The second-place team in the north division beat the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers 4-1 and Airdrie Bisons 3-1 at Akinsdale Arena. The Raiders (5-5) have stacked three wins together, all in St. Albert, after losing five in a row. Stuart Dovey, Xavier Halterman (power play), Austin Spiridakis and Brett Bamber (empty net) scored against the Rangers (3-8) as the Raiders recorded 42 shots on net. Bamber is a recent addition on defence after the former midget 15 St. Albert Flyer started the season with the Drayton Valley Thunder in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Bamber's arrival coincided with Ethan Green moving up to the Thunder. Green played two games with the Raiders after seeing action with the Spruce Grove Saints in the AJHL. Mitchell Reidy (4-2, 2.37 GAA) backstopped the Raiders past the Rangers and Evan Fradette (1-3, 2.73 GAA) was the winning netminder against Airdrie (3-7) with a game-high 24 saves. Keigan Miller, an affiliate with the midget AA St. Albert Blues, fired the winning goal against Airdrie in the second period and assisted on Jacob Hiemstra’s insurance marker early in the third. Miller leads the Blues (3-1-1) in scoring with six goals and seven points. Cam Aucoin also scored as the Raiders improved to 3-3 in St. Albert. The Raiders continue their seven-game homestand as the host team for the AMHL’s Showcase Extravaganza at Servus Credit Union Place. The weekend event consists of 18 games spread over three days. The Raiders face-off against the Okotoks Oilers (4-3-3) at 7:15 p.m. Saturday and the Red Deer Chiefs (4-2-4) at 4:15 p.m. Sunday and both games are at Go Auto Arena.

Jets falling

A three-game losing streak has dropped the Morinville Jets into fifth place in the west division of the Capital Junior B Hockey League. Last weekend, the Jets (6-4-1) fell 5-2 to the host Beaumont Chiefs (10-3) and 6-5 to the Stony Plain Flyers (7-7-1) at Ray McDonald Sports Centre. Brett Dubuc tallied twice against the Chiefs for 16 goals on the season. Shots were 40-29 for the Chiefs and Luke Hall (2-2, 2.94 GAA) was in net for the Jets. The scoring stats against the Flyers were unavailable at press time. The Jets are back on the ice Friday against Spruce Grove Regals (1-10-1) at 7:45 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena and Sunday’s game time against the Edmonton Mustangs (2-8-1) is 7:15 p.m. in Morinville.

Slash split two

The St. Albert Slash remain in first place in the Alberta Female Hockey League after splitting two games last weekend. The 2017 Esso Cup national midget AAA champions lost 2-1 to the second-place Lloydminster Steelers at Troy Murray Arena and defeated the Calgary Fire 6-1 at Max Bell Centre. The Steelers (6-0) netted the game winner with five seconds to play after the Slash (6-2) tied it up on Madison Willan’s power-play marker with 3:06 remaining. The Steelers opened the scoring Friday on the power play in the first period. Shots were 37-23 for the Slash and Brianna Sank (3-1, 1.22 GAA) was between the pipes. The next day, the Fire (2-5-1) scored first and the Slash responded in the middle frame with goals by Allison Reich (power play), Makenna Schuttler, Shyla Kirwer and Caleigh Meraw. Mackenzie Butz (empty net) and Jayme Doyle closed out the scoring late in the contest. Shots were 34-30 for the Slash as netminder Camryn Drever (3-1, 1.76 GAA) posted the win. The Slash travel this weekend to play the Rocky Mountain Raiders (5-2-1) Saturday at 4:45 p.m. in Dewinton and the Fire at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at Max Bell.

Sabres win

Evan Arnold’s sixth goal of the season for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres was the game winner Sunday against the Calgary Northstar Sabres. The only goal in the third period snapped a 3-3 deadlock at Akinsdale Arena. Tyson Greenway, the lone returning player on the St. Albert roster, potted his team-high 11th goal and picked up two assists for 15 points in 11 games. David Saunders (shorthanded) and Jaxon Dube also scored. Shots were 13-7 in the third and 30-29 overall for St. Albert and Matt Tebbutt (6-0-1, 2.44 GAA) was in net. St. Albert (7-2-2) is first in the charger north division and Calgary (6-6-2) is third in the challenger south division. The next Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League game for the Sabres is Monday versus the Sherwood Park Flyers (5-5) at 6:45 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink.

Midget 15 Flyers

The St. Albert Flyers closed out the team’s October schedule with a record of 6-1-2 after winning three in a row in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League. The last victory for the Flyers (6-2-2) was Saturday’s 4-1 decision against the host Leduc Oil Kings (5-4). Luke Cust, Ethan Pool, Sean Mitchell (power play) and Ethan McKinley scored and Ryley Morgan drew two assists. Matt Clement (3-0-2, 3.40 GAA) faced 11 shots as the Flyers were credited with 51 shots. Morgan is the team’s top point producer with 13 and shares the lead in goals with Cust and Maddux Nollski with six apiece. Saturday the Flyers play the Maple Leafs (3-3-1) at 6:30 p.m. at Kenilworth Arena and Sunday’s game time against the Squires (7-1) is 3:30 p.m. in Sherwood Park.

Crusaders action

The next game for the St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders is Thursday in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League. Faceoff is 8:15 p.m. against CAC Butchers & Packers at Callingwood Recreation Centre. The Crusaders (5-1-2) are first in the Besa division and the CAC (3-0-3) is third in the Anderson division. The 2017 NAMHL finalists are coming off a 6-2 victory over the Sturgeon Sting in Morinville. Three goals by Ryan Deets included the game winner on the power play in the second period. Deets leads the Crusaders in scoring with nine goals and 12 points. Zach Giacobbo, Hayden Laporte and Matt Kachmar also scored and Kyle Lawrence and Matt Offenberger chipped in with two assists apiece. Reis Armstrong and Jeff Smith replied for Sturgeon (1-6), fifth in the Besa division. Austin Fetsch (1-3, 7.09 GAA) of Sturgeon was credited with 49 saves and Shane Zilka (3-1, 1.67 GAA) of the Crusaders was tested 16 times. Sunday the Crusaders host the Lakeland Panthers (2-4), fifth in the CanAccom division, at 2:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Sharks attack

The midget elite St. Albert Sharks are undefeated in the Alberta Female Hockey League after recording their fourth win of the season. Brooke Doyle (shorthanded) and Jessica Kormysh notched goals in the third period in Sunday’s 2-1 decision over the Lloydminster Steelers (2-3-1) at Go Auto Arena. The Steelers capitalized with the man advantage with 4:48 to play. Cecelia Michelutti (2-0, 0.50 GAA) of the Sharks stopped a game-high 23 shots. The day before in Sherwood Park, the Sharks edged the Fury 2-1 as Kylie Foisy broke a 1-1 tie with three minutes remaining after the Fury (2-3) pulled even 34 seconds earlier. Kendra Johnston lit the lamp in the first frame with her team-leading third goal. Shots were 28-21 for the Sharks and Holly Borrett (2-0, 1.00 GAA) was in net. The next game is Nov. 10 against the Steelers at 6:45 p.m. at the Border City.
