The playoffs kick-off Saturday for St. Albert (5-5) against the visiting Rockers (6-4) at 4 p.m. St. Albert lost 17-10 to the Rockers in league play June 10.

Ball hockey

The fourth annual Douglas Deacon Memorial Classic ball hockey tournament starts 5 p.m. Thursday at Transitions. The fun tournament helps provide community awareness for people with developmental disabilities. Everyone is welcome to play. Contact Shauna Schellenberg at 780-243-9023 for more information. Funds will also be raised for St. Albert Special Olympics. The tournament was established by Daniel Deacon in memory of his brother, Douglas, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 34. Transitions is located at 365 Carleton Drive in Campbell Business Park.

Rugby playoffs

The second division women’s playoffs kick off Saturday at the St Albert Rugby Football Club. Game time is 4 p.m. between SARFC (5-5, 11 bonus points) and the Rockers (6-4, five bonus points). The winner advances to the Sept. 16 semifinal at the home field of the first-place Grande Prairie Sirens (9-1) or second-place Lep/Tigers (8-2). The Edmonton Rugby Union final is Sept. 23 at 12:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park. The last ERU second division championship for SARFC was 2014. The Rockers defeated SARFC 17-10 June 10 in Leduc. Meanwhile, SARFC hosts the third division and premier men’s semifinals next Saturday. The SARFC thirds (8-2) finished first in the ERU table and the premier team (8-4) completes its Alberta Cup fixtures Saturday against the Irish (1-11) at 3:30 p.m. in Calgary.

Junior B hockey

The St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets skate into action this weekend as tryouts continue for the Capital Junior B Hockey League teams. Friday the Merchants are in Sherwood Park to play the Knights at 8:15 p.m. and the Jets host the Strathcona Bruins at 8:45 p.m. in the three-team tournament at Ray McDonald Sports Centre. The Jets also face off against the Edmonton Mustangs at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Stony Plain Flyers at 7:15 p.m. Sunday. The Merchants also have exhibitions Monday against the Edmonton Royals at Confederation Arena and Sept. 17 against the Knights at Akinsdale Arena. Game times are 8 p.m. The Merchants and Jets hook up in the Sept. 22 league opener at 8 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink. Last season the Jets (27-7-4) captured the west division pennant and the Merchants (18-16-4) finished fourth. In the playoffs, the fifth-place Flyers (17-18-3) beat the Merchants twice in the best-of-three qualifying round and went the distance to upset the Jets in the best-of-five quarter-finals.
