Dig into the start of the volleyball season

SAPEC volleyball

The annual St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high volleyball tournament swings into action at 2 p.m. Friday for 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams. The draw consists of 102 best-of-three matches at Sir George Simpson, Ecole Secondaire Sainte Marguerite D’Youville and Alexander Taché for the boys and William D. Cuts and the SkyDome for the girls. Saturday’s playoffs begin at 9 a.m. and the finals are 3:15 p.m. for the boys at Simpson and the girls at the SkyDome. Last year’s winners were the Lorne Akins Gators for the boys and Simpson Voyageurs for the girls. Meanwhile, the SAPEC regular season starts next month and the defending Tier I city volleyball champions are Lorne Akins for the boys and Simpson for the girls.

Bulldogs volleyball

The Bellerose Bulldogs are undefeated in senior men’s and women’s volleyball to start the season. The division two men and division three women are 2-0 in the metro Edmonton league. Monday the Bellerose men (6 GW/2 GL) host the O’Leary Spartans (0-1) at 6:30 p.m. and the lady Bulldogs (6 GW/0 GL) visit the Louis St. Laurent Barons (1-1) at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs are the defending division three women’s champions and division two men’s finalists.

Volleyball Blues

The Paul Kane Blues are winless in two division one matches after capturing the division two men’s championship last year. The Blues suffered identical 3-1 losses to the Strathcona Lords (1-1) and Salisbury Sabres (1-1) this week. Monday the Blues play the host Louis St. Laurent Barons (1-1) at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday’s match against the Harry Ainlay Titans (2-0) starts at 5 p.m. at Paul Kane. The 33rd victory in 44 league and tournament matches for the Blues last year was the four-set decision against the Bellerose Bulldogs in the division two final as Paul Kane celebrated its first metro Edmonton senior men’s volleyball banner while going 9-1 in the division.

SACHS volleyball

The St. Albert Catholic High School senior men’s volleyball team served up two victories in the season-opening week in division two. Scores were 3-1 against the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (0-1) and 3-2 against the Mother Margaret Mary Storm (0-2). Monday the Skyhawks visit the Ardrossan Bisons (1-1) at 5 p.m. The last metro Edmonton league match before the playoffs is Oct. 25 against the host Bellerose Bulldogs at 5 p.m.
