The St. Albert Tigers fell from the ranks of the undefeated in the Sunburst Baseball League in Friday’s 6-5 loss to the Fort Saskatchewan A’s at Legion Memorial Park.
Mike Johnson, a former major league pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos and member of Team Canada, started for the Tigers. The right-hander twirled a seven-hitter and struck-out six, walked three and hit one batter while allowing four earned runs over five innings.
Derek Dallorto issued two earned runs on six hits and two walks in three innings of relief.
Brandon Barr, Joey Carr, Dan Curtis, John McHugh and Craig Tomas had two hits apiece against the A’s (3-1).
The senior AAA Tigers (2-1) are up to bat this Friday against the Parkland White Sox (1-3) at 7:30 p.m. in St. Albert.
Monday the Tigers play the Confederation Park Cubs (1-1) at 6:45 p.m. at John Fry Park.
The St. Albert Cardinals suffered their second loss of the season after dropping an 8-7 extra-inning decision to SEEBA 1 Saturday in Edmonton.
The Cardinals scored three runs in their first at-bat and SEEBA tied it with a three spot in the second. They pushed one run across in the fourth and added three more in the fifth before the Cardinals pulled even during a four-run seventh.
In the eighth the Cardinals stranded runners on base and in the bottom of the inning SEEBA scored the winning run on a pair of hits.
Evan Loranger and Triffon Tatarin had two hits apiece and Mat Brisson batted in two runs.
SEEBA out-hit the Cardinals 14-5 and the Cardinals committed the only error of the game.
Starting pitcher Tanner Karpinski was roughed up for six earned runs on nine hits and two walks over four innings and Brisson gave up two earned runs on five hits over the last three innings.
The Cardinals (6-2) and SEEBA (7-4) met again Tuesday but the score from Legion Memorial Park was unavailable at press time.
Tonight the Cardinals play the Spruce Grove White Sox 1 (3-7) at 7 p.m. in St. Albert.
This weekend the Cardinals are in tournament action in Medicine Hat and against the host Monarchs, Calgary Blues and Regina Wolfpack.
The St. Albert Cardinals are a perfect 5-0 in the bantam AAA provincial seeding round after recording three road wins last weekend.
Saturday the Cardinals swept the Lloydminster Twins 6-2 and 3-2 in the Border City.
In the opener Spencer Dronkelaar tossed a complete game five-hitter and allowed only one earned run while striking out three.
Max Barclay-Ward and Nate Brisson had multiple hits and Ross Supruniuk drove home two runs.
In game two Danny Tkachyk and Anthony Owen staked the Cardinals to a 2-0 lead after five innings and Supruniuk threw 4-2/3 innings of no-hit ball before the Twins tied it at two apiece in the top of the sixth.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Brisson drew a bases-loaded walk to push the go-ahead run across.
Owen was credited with the win and Dylan Gates needed only three pitches to strike out the final batter to record his first save of the season.
Sunday in Red Deer the Cardinals rallied from an 11-3 deficit to defeat the Braves 18-12.
After the Cardinals scored twice in the top of the first, it was all Braves for the next three innings as they counted 11 runs for a commanding 11-3 lead.
Brisson came on in relief in the third and scattered three hits while giving up one run.
In the sixth the Braves ran into pitching trouble and through a combination of walks, hit batters and timely hitting the Cardinals posted a 10 spot and added four more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
Owen, Supruniuk and Tkachyk registered multiple hits, Peter Corrigan knocked in three runs and Gates, Supruniuk, James Robillard and Cole Seitz had two RBIs apiece.
Tonight at 7 p.m. the Cardinals host the Sherwood Park A’s at Legion Memorial Park.
Rhys Mazur of the St. Albert Cardinals ended the peewee AAA final of the Doc Plotsky tournament by striking out the last batter with the count full and the bases loaded to secure the 9-8 win against the hometown Sherwood Park A’s.
After a rain delay the Cardinals scored three runs in both the first and second innings.
The offence was led by Kelton Libich’s three hits and three RBIs and Davis Pratt’s two hits and two runs.
Starting pitcher Zach Froment battled through 3-2/3 innings to strike out eight while surrendering four runs. Pratt and Mazur followed on the mound for the last 3-1/3 innings as the Red Birds celebrated their second tournament victory of the season.
The Cardinals advanced to the final with a 9-5 win against the Spruce Grove White Sox.
Joseph Karall fanned nine batters in five innings of work and Liam Froment struck out three in two innings of relief.
Zach Froment banged out three hits and drove home three runs.
In round robin action the Cardinals blanked SEEBA 13-0 and crushed the Red Deer Braves 20-5. Karall batted 4-for-4 against the Braves and his five RBIs included a laser-beam, two-run homer.
Saturday the Cardinals host the As in a doubleheader at Legion Memorial Park. Game times are 12 and 3 p.m.
